    You've heard wrong.

Nobody is ranking pages with tweets.

It's a factor from over 400 factors that Google uses to rank a website. Can a tweet by itself increase the ranking of your page? No. In combination with other SEO methods? Yes.

Twitter and other social network signal can improve your SERP's in Google. But it's wrong that only twitter can make your website rich. Social signal's are powerful but core is On Page/Off Page Optimization.

Using twitter to improve SEO, if anyone actually said that without laughing,
is similar to using your pillow to improve SEO.

I can't sleep well, I can't work on my site.
I buy mypillow, for the best night's sleep in the whole wide world.
I can now work on my site, build links, etc.

So, use a pillow and it will improve your SEO.

Trust me, I love twitter. But people mix up SEO and social stuff like
      that all the time.

Either you are talking real SEO, or you're not. Real SEO has zip to do
      with twitter.

Anyone who says it does, must also agree that getting a new pillow will
      also help.

No wise man has the power to reason away what a fool believes.

It is not on any list of ranking factors. You are a clear example of the blind leading the blind.

Wake up people. Or just get offline now. I mean, why bother?

I don't think so,because twitter is a social media site and user don't interact with only SEO posts and all.

I don't know if twitter is a ranking factor though there's correlation between number of tweets and rankings. Correlation is not causation, of course, and Matt Cutts said it's not a ranking factor several times. I still don't know, I tend to read about "ranking factors" as isolated variables and I think if social networks were a ranking factor, they still would be associated to other variables to guarantee social interaction is not manipulated.

well social sites will help you to get traffic, if you will get dofollow links from them is a best thing you can do.. but as per my knowledge you will get nofollow link to your website.

Twitter automatically shortens URLs when they are tweeted..so about the only text link you can get from twitter is by setting the Website in your profile. No need to create multiple profiles for that so you can really only get about 1 link from twitter, lol.

I wouldn't say that twitter is bad for seo though it maynot be as good as you think. It is also a largest social media site now so it may also help a bit.

Twitter gives you nothing in terms of ranking, the best thing to go after on twitter is the traffic, i usualy send a few tweets a week and get a an astrnomical amount of visits from twitter alone, but it does nothing rank-wise

When you use Twitter singularly chances are that you are not going to get anything out of it. But when you use with other forms of marketing (Facebook, article marketing, SBM etc) you are going to get something valuable out of it. However, Twitter can be used to make a particular news item extremely popular or viral. Also, you can follow other websites and see how they use Twitter to their advantage.

Twitter is good for SEO as well as branding, if you notice just last week google has decided to include tweets upto 140 characters ranking in the serps. I am yet to see any tweet ranking but it will be interesting to see if anyone finds out any such tweet that is ranking on serp.

Social media sites such as Twitter is good for traffic and not for SEO as it is a nofollow site. So if you've heard that Google counts the links from these social media sites then you've heard wrong.

There has not been an agreement Since July 4th 2011 between Google and Twitter, that would allow Google to scan twitter and all of its posts / tweets. If Google is not scanning it... they are not using it as a matrix for rank. Tweets and retweets simply do NOT exist in Google land.

Matt Cutts have clearly said that Google's algorithm doesn't take social signals into consideration when it comes to rankings. Not only Twitter but none of the social networking platforms will help a website from SEO prospective. It can help you drive traffic though.

you can`t rely your whole SEO on just one thing... least on social media. This should be just an addition to your diversity of links... and that`s how this can benefit to you. Remember always google likes diversity of links!

edit: do not trust Matt Cutts too much, it is proven in SEO world he spreads sometimes bad information on purpose to see a reaction and catch the black hatters.
Every SEO effort is taking a google profit. If there would be no SEO, all would go to adwords and PPC

      Um, no.

If everyone went to AdWords, nobody would use Google anymore because it would all be paid listings.

Your getting a backlink in your Twitter profile to your website which is more important than backlinks in your tweets. More importantly take advantage of all Google's main services such as Youtube and blogger.com. Start a community in Google+ communities. Getting backlink from paid directories or link server farms is not a good practice or for that matter guest blogging if it's not revelant to your your website. Also trading links with other websites not revelant to your website will harm you also. If you own several domains on the same domain server, then trading links between them will raise a flag with Google.

Take the safe road and build your SEO campaign on social media sites, social bookmarking, local directories and blog sites. You can't rely on just one social media site for quality backlinks, you will need ALOT of backlinks from MANY social media sites. But off page SEO won't make you a success...you need on page SEO as well...watch this video for on page SEO
