SEO Goober Needed!

Have a good problem. I just purchased a website that has number 1 ranking for a very valuable keyword in my market. Here's my problem...

The site could be SO much better. The previous owner did a great job, but it could be improved upon. I want to convert the existing content into a Wordpress blog.

Can I 'mess up' placement by doing this? If so, what are some things that I need to do to make sure that I can keep those placements?

Suggestions?

      Yeah ya sure can mess up things if you are not careful! I guess my question is, why would you want to move it to a WP blog if it's already a site?

      Anyway, here's one thing you need to do. When you set-up a WP blog you need to make your (at least) home page static. By default it is not. If not your content will change on your home page and you do not want that if you are using a blog as a website.

      Also you will need to change a few things with the linking structure.

      When all said and done it can be done of course, but if it were me I would not. But, that's just me, I have a far better knowledge and control of css and html than the php and inner workings of WP

    I love it how the forum changes the word g-u-r-u to "goober". Makes me laugh every time.

    Anybody who needs a quick smile should go and read the "Forum Rules" on the main forum. Even Allen's G-U-R-U was changed to "Goober"

    on earth are you wanting to mess with it? I took a zero site and turned it
    into a PR3 blog in 3 months. But I'd be danged if I would do the opposite.
    Why not just add a blog to it?

      It has the ranking, the owner has been adding content since the early 90's. I believe the site was originally designed in Frontpage and it looks really dated. It hasn't gotten updated in a while (I reason the owner sold).

      Wordpress is easy for me, so turning into a blog would be an easy move. It is a site that needs to be updated to keep visitors interested, and WP is, again, easy.

      I am open to suggestions. I plan on getting a 'pro' to give me some pointers, but I am also looking for suggestions to make sure I am as educated as possible before changing anything.

    It can change your rankings for sure, but if everything is done carefully, title tags, texts... you might keep your rankings, or see a drop for a couple of weeks, and reclaim your spot! If you're comfortable, check out Drupal, much better for On-site SEO than WP, Joomla...
