Hello all.

I am in the process of purchasing a domain name that is expired. How can I tell if it has been penalized by Google without signing up for Analytics?

Thanks,

Daniel

    Hey Daniel

Welcome to the WF. This REALLY should be posted in the SEO section of this website, so make sure you post any SEO related questions there next time

Anyways, you can't see if it's got a FULL penalty without getting access to webmaster tools, but you CAN see if it's indexed or not

Go to google, and do a search like this:

    site:TheWebsite.com

If results show up, it's indexed - if NOT - then it's not indexed and there's a very good chance it's penalized

    Good luck!

Jeff above pretty much summed it up, but if the site has been empty and idle for a significant time it may not be indexed but also not penalized. Not a huge lot you can do if this is the case, but you can always look up the sites backlinks on Majestic, Ahrefs or OSE to see whether it has had blackhat SEO.

I agree with what others have suggested. You can always do a site:domain.com check in google to see if it's currently indexed. Although if its expired it was probably dropped even if it wasn't penalized. Look over the previous work that's been done to it and see if things look spammy. If they do, then it's a possibility.
