Ranking checker for google.com.au results?

I'm looking for a tool to monitor where my site falls in google results for certain search phrases for google.com.au and not google.com. What can you recommend? Something free would be nice, but I'm new to SEO so I don't know what to expect with this kind of software.

There's a couple around.

This is probably one of the best ones http://serpsuite.com does URL matching and phrase matching for stuff like Press Release titles on aussie Google but it's a paid service.

Instead using a software I would suggest to check directly in search engine for rankings to get accurate results...

  Not really. Even if you're experienced you can make a simple mistake with cookies, personalized results, or search settings. The job also gets tedious after just a few keywords. A decent SERP tracker gives consistent results and graphs.

Most rank trackers nowadays support localized Google rank tracking. Some examples are SERPBuddy and SERPFox.

Instead of SEO tools, I think we can use geo meta tags for the desired location on the home page of the website and also by setting the International Targeting to the desired country under Search Traffic of Google Web master Tools account
