Select Keywords for domain

There are 2 approaches basically:

1. You want an exact match domain - in that case you look in the AdWords tool the tell you the search volume for the desired keyword and the value of the keyword. Check google to see who is your competition for the keyword, if the websites in top 10 have massive authority you move on, and find another keyword / domain name, rinse repeat, until you find a spot where you see yourself beeing able to get a position in the top 10. This is your domain

2. You want to brand your website: You need a short, pronouncable and catchy name. There is no recipe how to do it, it is just trying. There are still a bunch of 5 letter .com domains available (focus on .com everything else sucks in compare), try it until you find one that sounds good and is not bought and buy it.

I usually prefer a combination of the 2.
Using a keyword in the domain name, while making it catchy and easy to remember. I think it's ideal, it's like killing 2 birds with one stone!

Use the Google Keyword Planner to search different terms and decide which keyphrases you are going to wanna target. You can then try to exact match them.. Otherwise, I try to include at least one or two of the keywords in the domain.

Use keyword planner to select keywords for the domain. You can make the genuine keywords yourself and then get suggestions in keyword planner tool.

Apart from keyword planner, I'd also recommend you to use Ubersuggest tool to find variety of keywords around your targeted keyword. Also, Google auto suggest & related searches (in the footer area of SERP) would also help you determine keywords that users are actually using.

Make an extensive keyword research using KeywordPlanner, ubersuggest and see if there's something interesting in dmoz... compare everything, and find the best one.
Make a site that has at least part of your KW is in URL (though this metric is less and less important by each day). So if you are plumber from LA than LAplumbing or branded like LAplum dot com or net (or local extension). Put your main KW into title and so on and on and on and on...

This is just a good start...

Making a right keyword selection is very important. The best strategy to choose keyword from keyword selector tools that will help you discover the right keyword. Keyword tool also shows competition and searches for a particular keyword even you can get relevant searches for the same.

Please don't be confused that adding keywords to your domain will necessarily help you rank for those keywords. Certainly it's not a bad thing to include them, but I would opt for a relevant, yet clever and memorable domain name

Domain name is a keyword in these days, similarly use Google planner tool for getting long tail keyword domains even for short keyword domain.
Longtail keyword domains rank very fast so search for them.
