Be patient in your link building (Off-page SEO Techniques ) because patience looks natural to Google. Don't try to smart with Google, if you doing a lot of activities in short time then it can harm your website rankings.

Go to Google, search your targeted keywords, pick any website on page 1 that looks similar to yours in content.

Take that URL, stick it into MajesticSEO (You will need a paid membership).

Then look at all the sites linking to your competitor. Study them and see how they managed to get those links, then do the same.

If they can gain those links, so can you.

Seems like an outdated copy/pasted contents - Digg, DMOZ, MySpace, .. no more value of those.

Link building is probably the most powerful off page SEO technique. High quality backlinks really help your website a lot!
Promoting your website on social media is also a great way to generate traffic. It might not help improve your rankings (since most social media websites are no-follow), but it will help drive traffic back o your website.

Mention other people and products in your post and send out tweets letting them know they were mentioned.
Get guest bloggers who will often promote the post to their audience (ex / current journalists have a healthy audience)
Send an email newsletter to your list with a personalised intro and a link to the blog post (I use MailChimp it's great).
Go into forums that are are active in and look for threads that your post relates to, if rules permit reply with a link to the post.
Update your forum signature every time you release a new post.
Use WiseStamp so your email signature always shows your latest post.

  No, not banned.
  If by SEO results you mean, use a particular keyword as anchor text, you do. If by SEO results you mean get a decent bump up in the ranks, you do not. I Back in 2010, 10 articles (2 links each in the bio box) on ezinearticles.com and go articles.com would put me in the top 3 positions for a bunch of keywords.
  
  In 2015, 10 articles in ezinearticles.com and some other directory (goarticles.com is not taking new articles) didn't move me 1 spot for far easier keywords.
  
  Would I move forward if I had 2,000,000? Possibly. But I don't have the stomach for that kind of output.
  
  Look into contacting webmasters and offering them an article (broker link method can work or just call them and say, I see you have a blog. If you ever tire of creating content, visit my site at... and take a look. I can create the same quality, on the same topics for you. All I want in return is 2 dofollow links to my site.
  
  Or you can create a handful of sites, preferably on aged domains that already have some links to them, and link to your main site from those... Hint: create good sites, same quality as your main site, just fewer pages.

I'd first do keyword analysis, then find your competitors best backlinks and do better than them.

If you are a local business then it is a different game. Sites like BBB and local chanbers of commerce are powerful links that are very authoritative.

Off page activities are considered as spam when you used copied and duplicate content. If your content is unique and high quality then there is no chance they count as spam by search engines.

Just build your website according to steps defined by Search Engines

Now if you are a good content writer then start writing, sharing, guest blogging your content with your links in anchors to get ranked.

What if you are not a good content writer and you still want to see your website on top search results? Don't Worry you can still have that chance.

Start building links, not simple one but quality links, which means links from high DA and PA websites.
Install Mozbar on your browser and start looking for blogs .gov blogs. forums and only work on websites having DA greater than 30.

If you work properly and do not spam on any of these blogs gov sites and forums, you will be getting excellent response from search engine in near future.

You will also not get anything done. But hey, if blog commenting is your idea of fun, go for it!

Please note: if someone tries to sell you .gov or .edu links, that guy is very likely a scammer of some sort. Or at least he's really fond of getting to your wallet for the minimum effort.

I agree wholeheartedly. Forum posting is really nice, because you get to call on BS that people post, and come up with creative insults. It's also off your own page.

I'm surprised no one has show HOW to find a good link and what represents a good link. Its all good posting a list like this:

1. Directory Submissions
2. Deep Linking
3. Social Book Marking
4. Classifieds Posting
5. Micro Blogging
6. Forums
7. Blog Commenting
8. Blog Posting
9. Business Listing
10. Social Networking Updates.

But you could still be wasting your efforts. Just because you do it, doesn't mean you're doing effective link building. 10 points to the next person that can take this to the next level. Now that you have the type of link that can be gained, how do you ensure its the right links for you.

You create your own network of sites, with quality content (supporting sites should be self-sufficient and make you some money).

You find broken links. Offer the site owner a replacement link.

Oh how I wish this forum would just insta-ban everyone who posts these incredibly stupid lists they copied from somewhere.

One would think it's a bit hard to compile a list with nothing worthwhile, but apparently it's very easy.

It's Google's fault, it remembers everything that worked 11 years ago, but does not append a notice that says: Information 11 years old; useless now.

So, someone could just Google it, copy all results and not know any better.

Bad Google. Good forum members who are too lazy to do proper research. Good people who have nothing to say but feel compelled to write posts.

On a serious note, did you notice that they don't read what came before, so they post the same thing as 200 others have posted long after those 200 were proven incorrect?

Find forums relevant to your niche that allow/encourage links to articles.

For example, if your niche is gaming, go to N4G.com and post a link to your gaming-related article (must be unique). Others will have to approve it, but if it's a good article that won't be a problem.

Then, you'll have a backlink from a high quality site.
