How To Determine Strength of Competition

Is it still a good idea to check your targeted "phrase" in quotes within Google to see how many pages are optimized for the phrase or does this not even matter anymore?

I have a phrase in which my page shows up number 1 for when searched for in quotes although shows up on the second page of Google without quotes. The page is a homepage of an aged PR2 domain with solid metrics and lots of general niche relevant links as well as branding links.

What other things do you look for when deciding on a phrase to target?

Thanks!

Most people search a phrase without using quotes. This means you need to build up the authority of that page by first making sure your site has no on-page errors (use this free tool to check) and to increase the link profile of that page.

Compare your site metrics against the others who rank above you to determine the difference. Use Open Site Explorer tool from Moz.

I determine the strength of a web page by the domain authority and page authority using LTP, but if my phrase isnt really being used and get good monthly searches you know your on the right track on a winning keyword.
