I'll admit I'm a bit biased here as I run an SEO company but...


My greatest advice for you is:


1. Don't go for the cheapest source you can find
2. Don't try to 'game' the system - the system is smart
3. Choose writers who are native to the country you are targeting


Sure you can find individuals who will write content or spam backlinks for you for a few bucks but in 2015 you're really just playing the lottery. And if you're running a website business, you're smart enough to know "the lottery is a tax for people who are bad at math". If you don't want to do your own SEO work - avoid the bottom feeders and pay a little more. SEO is a real marketing strategy that takes real time. Someone's got to put in that time and get reimbursed for it. If they're not, they'll take shortcuts.


Look at it as an investment, even if you only get a few conversions from it - chances are they'll pay for the higher price you paid without the risk of having your results getting destroyed down the road or turning away visitors when they can't understand your content.

I'd recommend using a site like Elance to post an RFP for SEO services. If you don't want your project to be public, just say you will email the individual applicants your URL and target keywords. You'll get at least a dozen interested parties within a couple days. Most of them will be from India and Ukraine. Carefully examine their profiles and their history of previous client ratings and comments looking for a consistent pattern over more than a couple year of giving good results. This shows they are staying on top of changes and using White Hat techniques. Once you get a quote from them, probably a monthly fee for a minimum of 3 months (no more as 3 months is enough time to prove they can start to deliver results) ask if they will agree to a partial pay-for-performance agreement where you pay them half the monthly fee, or 75% of the monthly fee and at the end of 3-months you pay them a bonus per keyword based on mutually agreed minimum ranking targets (they can be pretty easy targets) so that if every keyword meets the reasonable target, they then get the full amount of their fee. If they miss some targets they don't make their full fee.

A lot of SEOs will bock at a pay-for-performance agreement because no one can predict the results accurately due to too many unknowns. But if the SEO is guaranteed at least part of the fee no matter what the results and the performance targets are reasonable and not too high, than any SEO that is confident in their skills shouldn't have a problem.

The problem is too many SEOs know they can find clients that look at SEO services as a mysterious black box and are willing to take on 100% of the risk that they don't the desired get results. Maybe that SEO doesn't keep that client but there's always another new client to get money out of for another three months. This is why the client feedback history of the service provider on Elance is critical. Make sure there are at least a 20 if not many more feebacks involving SEO projects spanning over a year. Service providers can easily start projects with family and friends (or themselves) to pad their ratings but it's too time consuming and costly (in Elance fees) for them to do it dozens and dozens of time over several months.

ASK FOR REFERENCES that you can email to ask them how their experience was. Strangely I've found it's very uncommon for most Elance contractors to provide references always citing Non Disclosure Agreements. This is not in line with how the real business world works where NDAs are the exception and NOT the rule and giving reference contacts is quite common. This question alone will separate out the seasoned professionals from the fly-by-night operations.

Outside of Elance where you see customer feedback, other companies you see if you do a Google Search I would only consider if they can back their claims up (their mouths) with at least a partial pay-for-performance agreement and/or multiple references you can contact.

Well first off all 95% tell you a lot of BS, they have no idea what they do or do just that what others do.

The first thing I would ask a SEO expert, what is your website and what are the 3 most important things you do.
Then I Google him, if he is not on the first page with those 3 words, you can ask yourself, if you can't do it for himself, why would you believe he can do it for you?

SEO is in my opinion very personal, and before you ask a company to help you, start reading about it, try to understand what has te be done, and then tell him what you really want.

Think logical, If you are a hairdresser in NEW YORK, do you need to be found in Los Angeles? Think realistic, how big is the chance that you will be found on the word “Insurance” if you know that 100.000 others also aim for that word.

This are things that an SEO expert should tell you, if he doesn’t, well he has no idea what SEO is.

I would always suggest business owners to learn a bit of SEO themselves. See you could ask your SEO provider for references, portfolio, etc. But how do you know if what they have done in the past is sustainable or not? For instance, there are cases where spamming blog comments and forum sections have got websites to the top temporarily - you look at the website, see them rank on top and assume they have done good work. A cursory look at the IM websites show that blog commenting is a pretty common tactic, so it doesn't come off as a bad strategy immediately. So you may end up hiring somebody who may not be doing real SEO and could potentially ruin your site altogether.

Most people are under estimating where the internet has taken us. I did too, in the past - now I've learn't from it.

You should no longer find a "reliable seo company". Those who say they are an SEO company - then you should stay away if you are in it for the long haul.

You need a digital marketing company/person who understands your needs/goals.
