Just want to get a good idea of how blog commenting works with SEO.

I'm assuming it would be tied to backlinking, but if you aren't allowed to post a link how does it help.

Is it about building a relationship with the blogger and then asking them to link your site to their page?

What are the best practices when it comes to this?

    No.
    First off, when you post a comment, other visitors click your nickname and visit your website.
    Second off, if links are dofollow, you can get a backlink.
    What are the best practices when it comes to this?
    Find blogs related to your niche and post comments.

    Blog Commenting is one of the best practice in terms of link building tactics. But there with giving link or with anchor text each and every time makes the software akismet installed alert about the spamming. So to get a genuine approach in terms of the SEO blog comments should be in a form to gain authoritativeness.

    For blog commenting you should use few tricks. Firstly don't try to use link with comment. Firstly just give reply with suggestion and regularly follow other comment and sometimes give reply to other commentators then automatically blow owner will judge you as real commentator then you can use link with your comment as a marketing.......

    Its long term way of marketing....... Spamming never give good result

    Don't use blog commenting as a SEO strategy. Waste of your time and effort because many people used to abuse it, so Google has severely devalued such a method.
