Google Ranking Archives Only?

Hey guys,

I just wanted to get some opinions. I have a site in which Google is ranking the tags..

like www.randomwebsite.com/subject tag.

This means that the title displays in google as "subject tag archives" and when you click on it a search page comes up on my site with the pages that have those tags.

Strangely enough none of my real pages are ranking, only the tags and search result type pages.

Anyone know why this might be? This isn't my first niche website and I've never had this "problem"... but I am using a new wordpress theme if that could potentially be the problem.

I've done on page SEO and am using SEO Maximus but nothing yet on Google except the tags.... and the strange thing is the tags are often the same name as at least one page name.

For instance, a page will be "random subjects on my website" and the tag will be "random subjects on my website" plus a bunch of other tags...and yet the tag will rank, but the page wont.

Thoughts?

Thanks!

Because you have not SEO'd tags, you couldn't mess up the tags. Because you SEO'd posts/pages, you had the opportunity to mess up. And you did.

Okay, well if that's the case how can I determine what the problem is?

For on-page SEO I use Yoast SEO plugin and simply make sure that I meet all the criteria there... keyword in my url, title, header, alt tag etc... I also make sure my main pages are at least 1000 (but preferably 2000+) words and blog posts are at least 500.

As for backlinks I've obviously been outsourcing that... I've used a warrior forum member as well as SEO Maximus making sure my keyword density and such are appropriate. I've used the warrior forum member before with sucess and just started using SEO Maximus a few days ago... I've only done backlinks on the homepage and one of the menu item pages.... yet the tags show up first for all the pages, not just the ones that I've put backlinks on.... yet I assume the backlinking could influence the entire site...

    Any suggestions are appreciated!
