Hello All,

I have a website that has been up for years. I am page on on google for alot of the search terms I want. I have a new domain name that really matches my company and what we do. I want to start using the new domain name but dont want to lose the footing we have on the web now. What is the best way to do this? I was told a 301 to the new url. copy all website files to the new domain hosting account. Would this be the way to do it?

Yes, 301 redirect is a right way, and I would say, it is the only way.

Thank you. So I copied the website to the new hosting with the new domain name. So now I delete the website from the old hosting and on the old domain name do a 301?

301 (Permanent Redirect) would be the way to go indeed.

Setup your new website, then go into your registrar and setup the 301 redirect from your current domain.. and you're good to go!

Once a friend of mine accidentally 301 redirect all the old urls to just the root of new domain as lost numerous post rankings, so be careful to properly map the old vs new urls before implementing 301 redirection.

If you don't know much about 301 re-directs hire somebody off of Craigslist for a few hours to help you to do it.

Better than risking your business and hoping you did it right.
