The htaccess file does a lot of behind the scenes things on your website host.

As far as I'm aware, Yoast doesn't add anything to the file, it just allows you an easy way to edit it. But if you don't know what you're doing, steer clear as it can do some powerful things.

The file can be used for SEO - check this article.

But remember if you get something wrong you could make your whole website impossible to view. Or you could encounter unintended consequences. It's the kind of file that's best left to computers or geeks.

I don't think Yoast SEO uses .htaccess. That's because it's a configuration file for the web HTTP server software. Yoast SEO operates within WordPress.

The friendly URLs depend on that file, though. They come from WordPress core.

Also many optimizations by W3 Total Cache and other cache plugins depend on .htaccess. I'd consider that a central part of on-page optimizations.
    Signature
Links in signature will not help your SEO. Not on this site, and not on any other forum.
Who told me this? An ex Google web spam engineer.

    What's your excuse?
