There is a dot com domain that is parked that I want to buy. Let's all it AwesomeDomain.com

Some domain squatter guy wants hundreds of thousands of dollars for it.

I registered AwesomeDomain.io.

Assuming I build an e-commerce site on it and follow all the advice about back links, keywords, blogs, etc, can AwesomeDomain.io out rank the dot com version? He has had a parking page on the site for years and years.

AdWords says there is 500,000 searches a month for this domain. Can I swoop in and capture the vast majority of those searches?

I assume Google simply looks at the content and it the content is good and relates to the domain, it should rank well, no? Yes?

I only buy .com domains, I would try to be creative and create a .com domain with your keywords in it even if it even if you have to add an extra word. This will get more search hits than using a .io domain.

.com domains are what I go for, as search engines tend to look for these first. A .com domain will generally rank higher than a domain with .net or other.

Before you choose a .io domain make sure you look at your who target market is. A lot of older people will ALWAYS type .com as they have no idea about new TLDs.

It's obviously best to always go for .com domains but I'm pretty sure Google don't favour them over over domains.

.com, .org, .net are the most favored extensions and serp dominated by these domains mostly (incl .edu & .gov) and country specific extension like co.uk in UK

Apart from that, I want to mention this .us domain never mean favored by google. It better to go for established extension than new one. Go for new on only if you get great domains like dog.io or something like that.

ROTFLMAO! You are so misinformed, it's not even funny.

Government agencies (US) haved used .us for years....so much so, it's
funny nobody every talks about getting a .us link as having some magical
power. The vast amount of school districts, for example, use them.
Many states, cities, counties, as well.

And as far as .com, etc., you are once again sadly mistaken.

.com is not in the majority of websites.....if you did not know that,
which it is obvious that you don't, well, that's just more wannabe
      mentality.

Such funny nonsense from clueless people.

BTW: Don't ever share a youtube video with a link provided by google...
nobody will ever click on a .be webpage...

Always go for the .com version of your domain.

All of these new ones are ridiculous (in my opinion) and I wouldn't register one.

You can rank any TLD just fine, it doesn't have to be a .com to rank. If your server is in the region you are targeting and the content is relevant to that region (language for e.g) then there is no reason for your .io to rank as well or better than any other TLD.

The issue is with word of mouth and people revisiting. As others have said people likely will just type .com assuming that will be the end of your website address and when confronted with a parked domain either click on their ads or move along.

Personally I would try for a different .com domain that is either similar or brand-able.

    Ok, to summarize:

    1) .io could rank well, esp if it relates to the keywords and I put the effort into it. (BTW the keywords are literally "Awesome Domain". 500,000 searches per month on that combination of words)

    2) The parking page (AwesomeDomain.com) doesn't come up, because Google recognizes its parked and ranks it low.

    3) Returning customers will most likely return to the .com and be disappointed when they see the parked page.

    4) I should register a closely related domain like MyAwesomeDomain.com and would probably have better results.

    Could I try BOTH approaches?

Could I build identical sites on AwesomeDomain.io and on MyAwesomeDomain.com and see which one works better?
