Hi folks, im looking at adding a new addition to my many sites, in the form of a separate forum website. ive got my ideas and plans on the table, and just need some advice on the seo side of a forum.

Do the same principles apply to a forum as that of a website, are their any other ways to help rank a forum? ive heard its harder to rank a forum than a website. this will be my first forum.

any advice would be greatly appreciated, esp from those who run forums on a daily basis

Cheers

Bertie

Study the warriorforum, the new owners are going for what you're talking about.

Recently, the SEO subform got a description at the top, and keywords.

Just woke up, can't tell if you're being sarcastic or not.

I've not been trying to rank forum for some time, but couple of years ago they were actually easier than normal websites. Or that was at least my impression based on the discussion and my own anecdotes.

Links in signature will not help your SEO. Not on this site, and not on any other forum.
Who told me this? An ex Google web spam engineer.

      What's your excuse?

    Hi Bertieallsorts,

I am seeking for the same advice as well, as I am starting my own forum too xD. I hope you can share with me if you happen to find your solutions to ranking your forum. I will share with you if I find any solutions.

    Thanks.

PS: My forum would be targeting a very niche market. Hopefully not the same as yours.

Well, the first thing you need to do is look for SEO mods to install on your forums. Depending on what script you're gonna use, you should simply google this and see what you find.
And the thing with SEO and forums is this: the users are the ones that do most of the onpage SEO work. So, you should focus on getting loads of traffic, so your users will post, post, post! Forum means content, which is mainly generated by your users.

You only promote the home page of forum not internal pages.Internal pages and posting ranking automatically improved if the huge user are visiting the particular posts or reply the same.

    Hello Bertie,
First optimize the designing part of your forum site. It should have an eye catching design, and most important thing is categorization of Topics. All of main forum and their sub forums must be categorized well.
Don't try to promote your forum by offering dofollow link. You may get traffic in start by this but imo you would loose good and experienced specialist.

It won't be so hard.. It would be hard to rank for a keyword unless it's a part of the URL! Content is not a problem as people write their own posts, so your forum will get new content often! Just be sure they don't copy/paste content and that you don't spam to get backlinks to your forum!
