I think so. From my check on mobile search it took "mobile-friendly" only, but a rank is not changed.

I didn't notice any big changes, and I don't think that was the point. The whole point was to "force" everyone to make their websites mobile friendly, since there are more and more people using mobile devices to browse the 'net.

So Google lied.

About "rewarding" mobile friendly sites. And they lied about penalizing non mobile friendly sites.

They should have just said - after X date, we will include mobile friendliness into our algorithm, but it will only have very, very, very minor effect....

See the problem here?

No. You're the one who's confused here. The alarmist clickbait articles about "mobilegeddon" were mostly a bunch of BS. Their lack of merit is also something that was repeatedly discussed on this forum before this algorithm change even took place.

Google has never said that they're going to penalize someone, or even that they're going to reward some sites. They basically said the opposite of what you claim, and actually said what you claim they should've said minus any prediction of outcome.

I am very sure I read that they said this update will be "significant". It was anything but.

No "rewarding", no "boosting" (words used in the descriptions for this update by Google themselves), and no "punishments" for non compliance. Nothing happened basically.

This was a FUD campaign by Google from start to finish.

And only this campaign goal was a resounding success....

Google herded the sheep really nice.

It was more significant for most average users than Penguin or Panda. This one actually may have affected their search rankings to some extend.

You wanted drastic changes across the board, and still feel that you were promised this huge event? You just need common sense, and couple of reality checks. It's just one ranking factor for one of their searches.

Also, Google's algorithm changes tend to be an ongoing process. This is just the beginning of the mobile algo.

You can deny until you are blue in the face, but it doesn't change the facts. And how can you say average users would see much more change than webmasters? If they are seeing change, then obviously the webmasters would detect changes. Aren't both the SAME?

That's not what I said. This is my sentence:

Where did you pull that "much more change"? Where did I put webmasters against users in the way you claim? If you read carefully I'm talking about "their rankings" so "users" in that sentence is more or less same than "webmasters". But missing that nuance would not have changed the message that much.

So you want to argue what is "significant" next?

Oh, and Google said Panda and Penguin would only affect a small percentage of their results, but I think the whole Internet landscape CHANGED from that day on. THAT my friend, is significant. Not this, which was probably only 5-10% of Panda/Penguin at most.

From your point of view. How is this so hard to comprehend?

There have been some ranking changes, and even some that were fairly big. Drops have been reported although they're rare. Changes in the range of 10-20 position don't seem to be uncommon. The weird thing is that sites without mobile layouts are sometimes doing better in the mobile search, but there's a lot of other signals and factors in play.

Well, yes. But only if you think that spam links and artificially generated BS was supposed to be a part of that landscape. There's quite a few of "internet marketers" who suffered because of the questionable methods they used, and unfortunately some honest business users got a bit of collateral for using bad consultants. We're in an IM bubble where this seems more commonplace than it would somewhere else.

Sorry, but throwing percentages around like that is very unimpressive. How did you came to that conclusion? What kind of data did you distill to get there? How do you account for the distinct effects that each update had? How do you know that the results are representative enough that you can use them as an argument?

Hey, go to other sites that ARE talking about this update, and check the responses. People are either miffed or angry that nothing (much) happened. You will get stronger language from them. Had I known that it was going to be this way, I would not have busted my ass in trying to get all my sites ready by April 21.

In fact, earnings generally went down AFTER conversion to mobile.

I have been a webmaster for close to a decade. I have seen all kinds of updates. I should have just ignored this "update", just like all those who have not made their sites mobile friendly. They are all still holding their places (very firmly). I also track a lot of SERPs and I know very little happened.

Typical Google. Mobile devices are easier to track, you see...

This is interesting. Especially the first sentence. Can I ask what kind of sites and niches/industries are you talking about? What kind of conversion are you talking about (on a general level)?

I'm guessing my profile is pretty similar. A bit more than a decade, and I'm a webmaster or web developer more than a marketer. I've previously had more sites in SERP trackers than I have now, but I've still got more than a dozen.

I understand the sentiment, and I'm sympathetic to the site owners who got scared by their SEO agency to fast track an unnecessary mobile change. Then again, that's something that they should've had already.

In my area, page 1 no longer has websites that are not mobile-friendly. Mobile-friendly means, though, is not the same a a great mobile-website experience (some of the sites that are still on page one have a script that shrinks everything, so everything fits on the screen but you can't read it).

On the other hand, there were only a couple of non-mobile-friendly sites on page 1, so hard to tell if mobile-ness was the reason they dropped out.

Note to everyone: Google said when it will roll out the change, it did not say how long it will take before full results are present.

At this point yes! google prefers mobile friendliness more especially on a mobile device. Just visit webmaster tools and look at your site stats under the mobile usability tab.

It seems that Google is acknowledging and loving websites and blogs that are mobile friendly. I strongly believe that once you enable that, not only you will gain organic traffic and clicks from Google search through desktop and laptop computers, but also on mobile devices as well. Just make sure that even if it's mobile friendly, you just need to give value to your audience by simply providing them useful high quality information. From there, you might be surprised that one day your rank will go higher.

Hello!
The company I work for has 8% mobile traffic due to our demographics. Although we are now moving to this direction.

But remember that Google will not lower your ranking simply because you don't have a mobile friendly website. Your current ranking will be kept on a desktop searches but if someone searches on the mobile device, then that is when your ranking will be affected.

Since in our case, that isn't a problem...yet.
