Many of the "SEO services" being sold around the popular IM forums are essentially "negative SEO" services these days. Google has gotten a lot better at identifying patterns, and IMO a lot of stuff people think they are doing is helpful, when they might have to start over with a brand new website 6 months down the road.

The game has changed. SEO is SEO until it might be negative SEO. Evolving thresholds that are different based on site type, site category, overoptimization penalties, tripping filters, penguin, panda, Google animals etc. Just trying to point out that a lot of "negative SEO" is likely "unintentional", and not necessarily people attacking their competitors' websites.

Negative SEO could involve stuff like link spam, or consistent DDOS attacks, even SERP engagement manipulation (running bots to search google for keywords and have these bots click on and visit only certain websites in the results for certain amounts of time. This might manipulate Google into thinking certain websites are more active/less active/more popular/less popular and can mess with other ranking signals.) Reading over some forums lately, it seems like things are pretty crazy these days when it comes to this kind of negative SEO stuff.

Negative SEO is judge negatively because negative methods include all bad techniques that are used to benefit ownself. It is a technique used to manipulate search results and is never acceptable. Internet is a community used by common people and we should take care of it by not adding junk to it just like we do in real life.

Negative seo means black hat seo tricks which only focusing to build useless back links without quality content.

Why do you need to know? To avoid making mistakes, I hope. Do google it, you'll find explanation, examples, you should find everything you need to know. But you should also google "white hat seo techniques", so you know what you should do, too.
