Yahoo answers for backlinking purposes? I don't think so because the reputable site is very strict when it comes to links.

Yes, these all things are still working to create backlinks. But, today I read an article.
Why Link Building Is NOT the Future of SEO
According this article user engagement is more important then link building.

Yes, Neil Patel is a well-known in SEO circles. Or perhaps "infamous" is the word.

He's not a SEO practitioner. To put it bluntly, you should stop paying attention to his wild claims. The basic premise of the article is not too bad, and he comes around to say that you should do SEO too. But I really loathe that hyperbolic title, and the the fact that he's always trying to weasel something unrelated to the field of SEO.

@KylieSweet authority site giving some credits to a new site? not really backlinks..but trusy maybe?

suchiroy@ i've just readed the article you priveded me , it looks interesting , but i guess...backlinks will still be couting when having a great content to rank on the first pages cuz otherwise ..people who write a good content (pro copywriters) can be ranked #1 in no time? I don't think it can be that wasy for some of them. but maybe thats just my opninion , thanks for the nice answer aswell.

Directories can be good if you pick the right ones.

Blog posts can work with a strategy behind them.

The rest really is just low quality stuff.

Article directories are easy. They are all terrible. Stay away from all of them.

Well, how about getting "real" links by link baiting or asking your friends and partners to link to you? Paid links are fairly popular alternative, but of course against Google's TOS. External web properties are another popular method, but then you have to remember that those need backlinks too.

I'm not sure what do you consider to be the difference between article submission and directory submission. I'm pretty sure that Mike F. wasn't talking about submitting articles to any kind of directories, but legitimate website or business directories.

Article directories tend to be the worst kind of cesspools that you don't want any backlinks from.

These methods are all going the way of the Dodo bird. Google is getting smarter at recognizing "fake" links (links you built to your own site vs real links from other individuals).

The best modern SEO link building methods are probably email outreach as described by RankXL blog, and creation of content like the skyscraper method or infographics as described by Backlinko blog.

The big hurdle about these methods is that you actually have to create great content to get other people to link to it, which is something that SEO'ers tend to avoid doing because they all want to take the easy road.
