Two Questions About Guest Posting

When doing a guest post on a high authority and relevant blog, what is more important:

1. getting a backlink back to your domain homepage
2. getting a backlink back to an individual page for a keyword you want to rank higher in search engines.

Which would you choose?

Also, is an author bio backlink less powerful than an in-post backlink? Equal?

I think it depends on what you need to rank. If you want to rank a page then get a backlink to your page if you want to rank a homepage then get a link there. It will depend on the site's policies whether you can get an inner page link or a homepage link.

I think Bio links are little less powerful than in-text links

      1. It depends what you have on your homepage and what you have on other pages.
Example: I write an article about teenagers and car insurance.
My home page is about how I sell 8 types of insurance (basically, a few images and 8 links going to the pages about the types of insurance, and a get a quote form.

I have a great post about car insurance.

It would make sense, given the topic of my article, to link to the post. From the point of view of getting targeted traffic to where it needs to go. From the point of SEO, it only matters if I try to rank the post.

If, on the other hand, my home page has some great info about car insurance that compliments the guest post, I could link to the home page too.

So, it depends on what you are trying to accomplish and how you're set up.

I'll go with what's necessary. I believe there is a difference between your homepage and that certain page you want to linked in, so it depends on what is the most necessary and relevant for that article. The best fit probably.

Ok so if I wanted to rank higher for a specific keyword then it would make sense to have a link back to that post.

But if sending a backlink to the homepage will help increase my overall domain authority, does it also help rank some of my inner pages, too?

Kind of like a domino effect? Or does it not work like that.

It's not really that hard. Whatever pages you've got linked from the page that gets the backlink will get a small benefit. When you're talking about sub pages, usually these linked pages include the top level items (main navi) and front page. Front page tends to have the same navigational elements, plus some links to content.

If you've got content that's relevant to the article, and the site owners allow you to have links in the content, perhaps you could link one of your own posts from the contents and still have the front page link in the author box. Yes, the link juice for each individual link will diminish from this, but I don't see that as such a big thing.

Links in signature will not help your SEO. Not on this site, and not on any other forum.
Who told me this? An ex Google web spam engineer.

      What's your excuse?

I would go with the second option but it would be better while getting a backlink inside the post and yes it would be a more effective option. However, so far, as my experience shows, many of the guest blogging sites do not want to insert a backlink into the text itself so your option left is only an author bio. And still it's better than nothing, right?

It depends on the page/keyword that you need to rank, although I recommend linking it to a page that is competing for a high-traffic keyword niche.

    1. Homepage - unless if the guest post is quite related to the content on the homepage, I would link it. However, homepages usually take a lot of time to rank (due to short-tail and common keywords), so I wouldn't recommend it if you're looking for quick results.

    2. When you're trying to rank inner pages, this is usually done with a long-tailed keyword (in my case). If the keyword happens to have low competition yet a high number of searches, I'd link to it for quick results (especially if you're trying to impress a client).

As for DA, I wouldn't look into it that much any more, but it's better to guest post for sites with a high one!
