First and foremost thing is to make sure that you have your on page done correctly - title, description and meta keywords, optimized images, robots.txt etc.
Then and then only will off page be effective. Good off page techniques:
1) Web 2.0 submission
2) Social Bookmarking
3) Image sharing
4) Article posting (1 article for one site site only)
5) Forum posting
6) Very active social media postings (Facebook/Twitter/LinkedIn/Pinterest - depending upon your site)
7) Creative PPT/PDF/Video submission
8) Classified/local profile creation etc.

Thank you Arindam Roy,

I use to post articles, but with your comment I am getting little confused as you said "1 article for one site site only". Does that mean we need to get different articles to be posted in different sites.

Actually I used to post the same articles in different article submission websites - was this wrong?

Also, regarding the article submission I would like to know if it is wrong to hyperlink the keywords to our website? and also I found that some websites doesn't allow hyper-linking. so how can we emphasis our keywords in it?

You're thinking too small and too technical, and chasing all the easy options by following arindamroy's suggestions.

If you can find an easy way to build a link, then Google probably doesn't care. Like everything else in life, the easier it is to gain a link, the less it is worth.

Think on what keywords you want to rank for. Go to Google, search those keywords, then pick the highest 3 ranking websites (that aren't either paid for or goliaths like Amazon, Wikipedia or anything of the like). Once you have your top 3 competitors, go over to either ahrefs, MajesticSEO or OSE, stick the URLs in there, and look at where they are getting links from. Study those links, figure out how they gained them, then figure out how you can do the same.

You can do following off-page optimization activities:

1. Leverage social bookmarking sites like digg, delicious, reddit etc.
2. You can leverage some forums and participate in discussions.
3. Also you can use Questions/Answers sites and share your website link as reference link.
4. You can write some Guest posts and give reference links of your website in Guest Blog content.
5. Leverage Local Business Listings
6. Share your website link as reference link on good article sites like ezinearticles.com
7. Leverage social networking sites like Facebook, Twitter etc. for sharing your posts their
9. Post some Infographics on your blog and share them on sites like SlideShare.net etc.

It will help you in getting traffic to your website

What is your business? Find related businesses that have a site and are in your area and ask them to give/sell you a link.

It works even better if they actually recommend you.

Say, you are a real estate attorney. You could find title companies and real estate offices and ask them to link to you.

You could pay them a monthly fee for the link (it's best if it comes from the above the fold area of the homepage (usually homepages get seen the most and have the most SEO power).

You could offer them a well-written article that people looking for what these site owners sell want, or maybe a video in exchange for a link.

You could trade links. It's best if you have 2 websites, they link to your website #1 and your website #2 links to them. But even reciprocal links help.

Look for sites that don't sell too many links (you don't want your link to be coming from a page that's got 3000 other outgoing links...)

Look into broken link building... That's where you find sites that have links pointing to nowhere, you figure out what they were pointint to, create similar but better/updated content, contact the owner to tell them they've got a link pointing to nowhere when it could point to your fine, fine piece of content.

Everything I mention costs time or money or both. And produces better results than article submissions, etc.
