How do you track your progress?

I'm pretty much clueless with it comes to SEO. But I have a wordpress blog with an SEO app that reviews my content to see if my articles are optimized for search.

I've been churning out content but I'm frustrated because I don't know how to tell if its having an impact. With PPC, it's so simple to see if a campaign is working. Are there any tools I can use to see my progress while I write content and try to improve my search rankings?

Your site traffic logs should reveal the information you want:

    "Are people reading my content?"
"How long are they reading it?"
    "What do they read next?"
"Where did they find it from?"

    etc. etc.

Those "SEO apps" are usually not that great. Some are better than others, but the sort of generic ones often tell you wether you've used the keyword you chose in an article you wrote. If you didn't know answer to that question already there's something seriously wrong.

SERP trackers are the way to see if you're ranking. Please note that new content may enjoy a sort of "honeymoon" with Google, and get rankings that are way above the final position, or your articles just may not ever rank for the keywords you chose.

Links in signature will not help your SEO. Not on this site, and not on any other forum.
Who told me this? An ex Google web spam engineer.

    What's your excuse?

Are you using a plugin like Yoast? If it's not a plugin, I am really curious HOW exactly a tool can tell you if the content is optimized

Well, it's a clear indication that you have to start spending time learning it. Or you'll learn how it works as you go. The tool that you can use that can tell how people are interacting with your site along with your contents is Google analytics since it gives that average amount of time people spend on your site and where the traffic comes from.

Learn to use Webmaster Tools and Google Analytic properly and that is all you will need to track your progress. Add in a bit of SpyFu or SEMRush to compare yourself against your competitors.
