What's the point of impressions?

I'm a bit confused. Just watched a video talking about media buying and getting tons of impressions. What's the point of paying for impressions? They aren't clicks, so they aren't direct traffic. Is the idea to just get the attention of people and show them your ad (and name, brand, URL?) Maybe I'm missing something, could use some clarification though. Thanks

You're right. Impressions are nothing if you don't get the clicks. The smart advertisers know you need quality clicks. The same can be said of impressions as without quality impressions, no way you'll get quality clicks. It would be like selling an air conditioner in Alaska.

So why do people care about quality impressions though? Do they care just about the impressions or about the clicks? I don't understand why people are even discussing impressions I guess..

CPM rates are traditionally better for either...

A) Awareness/branding

or

B) Offers where the demographic is really targeted, and the margins per conversion are really high.

Sometimes the odds can be beaten. Same philosophy behind TV advertising. It really depends on what's being sold and who it's being marketed to though.
