The best way I found is buying expired domains which have awesome backlink profiles in your niche.

It's fast and all you gotta do is look for sites which now are giving some types of errors like a 404 in the header. I use Google search cheatsheets for that kind of thing.

Then I go to ahrefs or moz to see their backlink profile.

Then after building a list I go to the whois registry to check their expiration date and save my list in an excel file.

When some of the sites "that are targeted in your niche" don't renew I move in to buy them and 301 them to my site.

Great way to build backlinks at a very low cost.

Is there any reason to actually build a website on top of the expired domains?

You don't need to build over expired domain. You do a 301 redirect to your actual site. That way the whole backlink profile which that site has built over the years, is now pointing to my site.

I was able to get some quite good edu and gov links thanks to my method, with relavant posts done on studies in my target niche. I only acquired the domain that expired that had a very nice backlink profile not build upon a defunct site.

The backlinks don't go away, especially if you don't leave it expired too long. That's why you need to research beforehand.

How does using a 301 compare to setting up the site as part of a PBN?

By PBN I assume you mean like private bloggers network right? I think it's probably the same thing I'm referring to, the only difference is I have to do the work of finding domains myself and I take the link juice all to myself. While PBN suggests sites to you and takes a fee?...I'm not too sure how it works if you can illuminate me a lil bit more about it.

I just read that PBNs were hit hard with Penguin in 2014 and basically didn't entertain the idea much longer.

With article directories and directory submissions doesn't bring you any kind of result, you have to think towards a strategical link building methods. Google is making hard for the businesses to get improvement in their rankings. You should not start to build links in the directories or irrelevant general sites which is not in your niche. Try to make use of the blogs, press release, guest posts and document sharing strategies. You can also try the forums and Q&A sites, however the content you are posting should add value for the question. You should not only try to acquire back links, you should also try to build authority for your brand.

Build quality back links instead of purchasing expired domains with back links .You must follow some task to make good back links which drive more traffic towards your website or blog . The links that are beneficial for doing web promotion of any business is guest posting, forum posting, social bookmarking etc. Many other Off page techniques are there which are useful for promoting any business online and it is very easy as well. Video promotion and Infographics are the two benficial task that impacts directly on the minds of viewers which compels them to visit our site for once atleast.

Well, I am following the same procedure as I have done in previous days.
What ever techniques you used to follow to optimize the site make sure to create a quality back-links. There is nothing better then this.
Usually I do QnA in quora and niche wise forum in High PR sites which gives a better result.

Content is king of what?

You'd be stupid not to get the best content you can, because you'll have more sales.

But great content by itself does nothing. You need your content optimized and, for competitive keywords, you need other people to talk about your site, link to it.

No mentioning your site on other site, your content will never be read.

Don't believe me?

Search for any term you want, go to the last page, read the content. You'll notice that quite often, it's as good, or better, than whoever is in the top position.

But he/she of the top position did better SEO.

To the OP, go do a search for seo EXPERTS AND GO READ THIR FORUMS FOR DAYS UNTIL YOU START GETTING A GRASP OF WHAT WORKED IN THE PAST AND DOESN'T WORK NOW AND WHAT WORKS IN 2015.

1. you can use Questions/Answers sites and share your website link as reference link.
2. You can write some Guest posts and give reference links of your website in Guest Blog content.
3. Leverage Local Business Listings
4. Share your website link as reference link on good article sites like ezinearticles.com
5. Leverage social networking sites like Facebook, Twitter etc. for sharing your posts their
