Redirects and Google rank

Like most other sites, mine has other sites linking into both www and non-www versions. I was told it is best practice to change the htacess file to redirect all non-www traffic to my www version in order to capture all backlinks. So that is what I did. Now I know that in Google webmaster tools I can add both versions and then select my preferred version. Is there any reason for me to add the non-www version in webmaster tools and set the preferred domain to the www version since everything from the non-www version redirects anyway? If I do add it, would it hurt my rank?

Thanks for your help!

You should add both domains to webmaster tools the www and non www and select your preferred domain. You will probably need to turn off the redirect for a minute to verify your non www one.

It will not hurt your rank.

There is probably no real benefit in claiming both domains though if you want to be lazy, you could just skip it, but I always do it for my websites... just in case.

This is a technical issue that has to do with how Web servers and nameservers identify and connect Web site domain names to an IP address, the REAL address of the Web site. Google fully understands this issue and the pages are NOT seen as duplicates. Many Web hosts these days have their servers set to url rewrite the www versions to non-www versions already. But as @PBSCoTT already said, you can but you don't have to enter it twice into Google Webmaster, and there's nothing to worry about.
