Do you add tags to your blog posts?

Why?

Do tags have SEO benefits? Do you add your keywords as tags?

I use a paid plugin that automatically adds tags to a post as soon as anyone visited the post. Plugin is called Traffic Tagger. I have heard that tags are not as important as they used to be, but I have a few sites where it was only because of my tags that the site reached the second or third page go Google.

I've heard someone else say that their tags helped them to rank in google, that's why I asked about this. That doesn't make sense to me because I didn't think your tags were for your keywords, but instead for the purposes of categorizing your pages for your viewers. I thought you just add a few words that your article is about in the tag field so if someone searches your site using those words they'll find articles on those topics, no?

    Actually, yes.

It's a great way to organize your content, especially if you're running a news blog or magazine that churns out dozens of articles a day. You also get to mention other keywords - and buff up the keyword density of a certain page (only do so if there is a lack of keywords on the content).

It's also a must if you want to employ a SILO strategy on your website as well: BruceClay - SEO Silos - how to build a website silo architecture

Of course, tags are important as any other part of meta data. Meta tags were used as queries so your website could appear it search engines.

No, but I usually use some categories. Nothing automatically generated. The taxonomies should match the main topics of the blog or site, and should tie several posts together in a meaningful way. If you're adding new tags whenever there's a new posts you're potentially generating duplicate content.

Yes, tags are having a lot of SEO benefits. They are helpful to get your blogpost or website being searched for that particular query that you added as tag. Adding relevant tags to the post will help your website or blog post rank well on search engines. I would recommend adding 3, 4 tags for a post. This will not only improve the importance of your blog post but also help your post rank well on search engines.

How would there be duplicate content? I don't understand that.

If I have an article with 1 main keyword and 3 similar keywords, should I make them all tags?
    Are all your tags keywords?
If I have a category and all the posts in that category are around the same topic, will some of those posts have the same tags?
I find this topic very confusing because nobody ever talks about it. Can somebody give me a couple of examples of articles and what you'd use for the tags?

Forget SEO for a moment and lets look at the real reason to use "Tags" they are there as a UX ( User Experience ) element of your site.

Lets say we have a soccer site. Category wise you might have "Players" as on of the options.

So you then write a Post about Clint Dempsey blah blah blah so on our end the looking at our site from a users eyes we think what other material might they be interested in? Clint Dempsey of course, Well we know Clint plays on the USMNT ( US Mens Team ) he also plays on the Seattle Sounders Team, He plays in the MLS league

THESE are all possible "Tags", links to other points of interest beyond the direct focus of the post being read. The idea is to link to other material they user may find of interest to stay on your page to further absorb your advertising and to develop an amount of trust with your site to say "Hey I should book mark this and come back regularly" and then if you are damn luck ( probably not to much in this crowd ) they might say "I trust this site enough to join their newsletter"

In terms of SEO Using the guys name in a link is usually a good thing, and in the case of "Tags" its not forced, and the same goes for all of the other links that would happen for Clint as well 2 Team Names and a League. There is without question such thing as to many tags... I have seen sites that have like lists of them for each article, and your link worth is squat by the end of that.

So keeping it short to the point and of value to the reader themselves is where you want to be with the use of tags.

There's sites that have the entire article content in the archives. Many WP themes do that, and I actually like to decide the "read more" point myself if I have the change.

If you're creating new tag archives for every minor thing, you probably have tag archives that only have that one article. At that point you'd have the original article, and the tag archive page. Some people have had their archives rank in SERPs, and the original articles were nowhere to be found.

As I said I find tags to be a bad idea on WordPress. Just use a few categories that make sense for your visitors and search engines.

Tags have their importance for sure but you will kill yourself if you would have to do it manually, just get and standard paid plugin to do it for you

We do tag our posts sometimes, however you need to pay very attention on the indexing, without good SEO plugins like Yoast, over indexed tag can be occurred and harm your ranking.

The solution on this would be use only 4-5 tags just for categorizing / grouping your content, or limit the indexing of taxonomy carefully.

Yes and you should feel free to add tags to your blog posts.

    Just note:
    i) Make sure they're actually relevant to what you're writing and not some random keywords that you wish to target
ii) Adding tags is not like 'magic'. You won't magically improve your SEO as a result of adding tags. However, if your other SEO factors are in place also, then yes, tags will help.

Well, I do not add any tags to my blog, unless I really need to maintain a big website like the coupon site, which has many sections, so tags becomes necessary to make navigation easier, but apart from navigation, I do not use it for SEO benefits.
