If you're not giving any meta description then in a SERP(Search Engine Result Page) search engine auto fetch first 150 characters from your content.

So it is best practice to write meta description for every content. It'll also help your page to rank high on SERP. and try to provide it within 150 characters (for best practice).

Google typically displays the first 60-70 characters of a title tag, or as many characters as will fit into a 512-pixel display. Try to keep your titles under 55-60 characters (for best practice).

Note: Title and Meta description is must for doing effective SEO.

That's not the issue (unless you don't make any sense, or keep asking stuff that Google can tell you better).

However, there's always people who feel they should answer when they don't get the basics right.

As long as you've got <title> tag set you don't need meta titles. Google only uses the title tag.

Some professional SEOs disagree with you. The dynamic meta descriptions that Google provides may be better for your click through rates because they may fit searches better than your static ones. There's huge sites that don't bother with them.

Meta description isn't a ranking factor, so even in that sense it's not necessary.

Yes, on-page SEO requires this, on-page SEO is not MUCH important then off-page SEO, but help you beat your competitor on engine rankings.

Put a title with your main keywords and description too.

Meta title tags are pretty much useless as they are very, very rarely used.

Title tags, however, are very important.

You should ensure you don't confuse the two.

Beat me to it. Anyone who does not know the difference between meta title
and title tag, is an idiot, knows nothing. And yet, look at all the clueless
      people above. Go figure.

Meta title is useless in 2015 for SEO.

Check my replies here. I have regularly called fools out who keep saying
      meta title....completely clueless.
