Technically, both could be correct.

Google no longer has universal rankings. Whether you are checking personalized results or not, there can be serious ranking variations. Location, for example can cause a big difference. Depending where you are located, depends on what Google datacenter you are connecting to. Each datacenter does not have the same data stored and can have different rankings. Especially in the case of low ranking sites, things can vary pretty wildly.

All that being said, I found SerpBook to suck horribly.

I have been using RankWatch for over a year now. Pretty happy with it. Only thing I hate is they way they count keywords in your package plan. They are not alone in this. Plenty of the other trackers do it too. If I pick 10 keywords to track in Google.com, it's 10 keywords. However, if I want to track those same keywords in Yahoo and Bing, now it is 30 keywords. If I want to track them in Google Mobile Search, now those 10, count as 40.

That pisses me off. Like I said though, RankWatch is not alone in that practice.

Yeah pretty sure I was checking the same location as serpbook as it is set to google.com
and I went too Google.com/ncr which allows me to check the .com google as im in UK so my default is .co.uk so I always have to use Google.com/ncr

Had a look at RankWatch and looks alright, going to start the 14 day trial hopefully this is good.

But you have no way of knowing the location SERPbook was using. When I say location, I do not just mean country. Rankings can be different within the same state.

Someone in the US could go to google.com and I could be on 10th page?

Yeah I found serplab last night and it seems very good considering it's free. SerpLab & RankWatch both bring back very similar results as I get checking manually on google.com/ncr (give or take 2-3 places)

Doing it manually is reliable. Using a good tool is reliable. My point is that Google stopped using universal results a long time ago. Rankings vary from location to location. Now often on page 1 they are pretty similar across a wide area, but even then you will see some variations.

The only time I use a rank tracker to really pinpoint rankings is for a local SEO project. Other than that, I'm just looking for trends. Are keywords trending upwards or downwards.

We check manually but if Google ranks by location and our local area is a zero customer market we need to know what rank we we have on a global basis.... as does many others

Nobody is using a rank tracker to get real organic local SERP positions. Instead they're getting local SERPs based on the rank tracker server/host GEO location, not their own ISP GEO location.

Better use UberSuggest to get long tail keywords, and Google Keyword Planner for finding out it's avg. monthly searches followed by competitors analysis to determine whether or not should you work on it.

hahaha! Are you serious? After seeing the results and you are still confused with it, then that would be the time for you to manually check the ranking.

Your answer only applicable if you don't have clients or many websites/keywords. Client's will ask visual report to their keyword ranking (Visual GRAPH ), starting from day 1 of your work to see for any improvement.

I agree. Results come direct from google using anonymous private proxies. There will always be slight differences in results because of the google server it hits or the location of the particular private proxy it used to make the request, but the results do come direct from google.

As far as people saying check manually....when you have 10+ keywords and you want to track changes over time, or you don't rank on the first page on google, good luck with that time consuming task. Ouch!

Sorry this is just not true and sounds like an assumption. There are rank checkers i tested over and over again and works 100% Accurately. The way the scripts are programmed/coded are the main factors contributing to rank accuracy.

I would recommend that you give semrush.com a try, there are many other reliable tools which you can use for free online.

If you want to check the ranking of your keywords than you must go with SERPbook or else if you want new keywords than you must go with Google Adwords, Keywordtool.io, keywordplanner etc. A website requires both these tools, as at some point of time it requires to view everything as per the competition in the market.

If you do this, at least research where you can go wrong, and see that you get results that are not personalized and not from any wrong language/country version for whatever reason.

If you've got more than, say, 10 keywords it tends to get really frustrating to monitor those.

2 Tools you need. Long tail pro and Google keyword tool. These are the 2 you need! NO need other software! There are tons of keyword software. The best are those 2. Market samurai, etc are outdated!
