Google and Comment Spam

Hi,

So I'd like to hear your take on this. I'm taking over a website where the previous webmaster supposedly hired a spammer which used software to spam comment sections of blogs and other websites. Big no no!

Now, backlink analysis revealed thousands of backlinks from these comments mainly targeting anchor text for 10 related keywords. The website is still indexed by google but as the spam was going on for sort of years my worry is that it could become completely penalised very soon.

There's no way to go and remove the links manually or contacting webmasters. My question is whether it is worth it to try and focus on keywords that have not been used by the spammer as there's tiny traffic for some of them, maps are ok as well, and hope the rest will recover as the spam has stopped now.

Let me guys know whats your thoughts please.

Thanks a million

Look at disavowing those backlinks: https://support.google.com/webmasters/answer/2648487

But don't bother contacting the site's owners with a removal request. Chances are they don't even know the links exist. Either that, or they can't change anything on the site.

Focus instead on the disavow text file and follow the instructions.

Thanks for your feedback mate. I was obviously thinking about the disavow tool but it's thousands of links so my worry is it might be a wasted effort. You may not always experience a recovery after using the disavow tool..they say.

On the other hand there's no other way I suppose.

      Cheers

Export the links, disavow them in WMT.

Thanks for getting back man. Well until now the backlink section of WMT was blank, it now shows like 4 links. But I can see thousands of links using moz and majestic tools.

So I though I'd subscribe to one of these tools and handpicked the most toxic do follow links? What tool do you recommend for this gig?

      Thanks
