50% Traffic Drop in under 2 Months

Hey All,

Not sure if this is the correct forum so apologize if it is. I have a blog which I have been working on over the past 18 months and everything was going great until a couple of months ago when traffic really started to tank.

Ive tried a few things but I am still down over 50% of organic hits compared to 2 months ago.

1. I noticed the site has a time to first byte of 6s around 2 weeks ago and have migrated over to nginx - site is snappy now.

2. I went through old posts and got rid of bad performing posts that didn't really tie in with the niche of the site any

3. I located a guest post I accepted which had been used in a link tier with loads of low quality, some spammy gambling sites pointing to the page, I have deleted the blog post so it returns a 404 and disavowed the links

My primary domain is web development, SEO is something I never really grasped off-site.

Do you guys have any suggestions to recover my traffic?

    Not enough data to really give a good idea, but getting rid of the spammy inbound links is a good start.
    Sometimes it just takes time for a site to recover. I would check your site to see if has hit any blacklists. I've seen that kill the organic traffic more than once.

      How would I go about checking that? I would get an SEO in to get this sorted but I get stung or twatted off everytime xD

    Have you checked where a lot of your traffic has been coming from, it might not be your website that was the problem but spammy sites that were sending traffic to it was. Google slapped those sites and your getting the results of that!.

    I have checked my traffic, I had over 400 organics a day at one point (mostly google) now I am lucky to hit 200 a day.

    I will say that checking stats today and things are looking promising and a little better but not by much. Might be obvious to some, but is there any tools around where I can analyze my back link profile and see if any may of been penalized?

    EDIT: I did a huge clear up of bad guest posts, trash posts and bad filler content a couple days ago also

    Is the site the one in your sig? Would like to take a peek, because it's a bit hard to just guess.

    This might be obvious, but check Google WMT for reports on 404 and other issues. Especially now that you've deleted some articles. I think it's positive that you got rid of that gambling article, and disavowed the links.

    The speed you describe sounds pretty low so it's good that you god it fixed.

      Hey,

      Yeah my site is the one in the sig. I have my eye on WMT daily and also have a 404 page monitoring script that is picking up referring pages for me.

      Traffic is definitely picking up again since I have been proactive and deleted content / disavowed bad links. Taking time to fully set in but getting there.

    If you are not working on SEO optimization of your site, then it is not surprising at all. Remember that you have many competitors and if they are doing great with their SEO - they appear more credential and visible sources of information. This might be an option where your traffic went.
