Is effective SEO for google even possible?

Hi guys and gals,

I'm currently doing some keyword research, and I'm finding that when I do standard google searches, it's actually pretty rare that you get any pages in the top 10 containing the exact search term I used in the search box.

For example, if I type in "how much is a dog collar" (without the quotation marks) not a single result on the first page contains the exact phrase "how much is a dog collar" in the URL or page title. There are a number of variations, but none with the exact phrase.

This leads me to ask: why would we do all those hours of keyword research, to finally decide that "how much is a dog collar" is a decent phrase to use (high search, high AW comp, high CPC) and then optimize our page for that specific KW, (ie. put it in the URL, title, alt-tags, etc.) when in the end, it looks like all that effort won't make a difference?! I mean, none of the top 10 pages have it in their URL, title, or anywhere else! And I don't believe that no-one else in the entire world has tried to optimize for that keyword.

It just seems as though google decides what is relevant (presumably using LSI words) and shows you what he thinks! Great from a searchers perspective, as you get relevant results, but not so much for a marketer trying to rank his page!

Am I missing something? How are we supposed to know how to get on to page 1 for that particular keyword? Of course, Gs algorithms are a secret and always will be, but... how?!

Please someone tell me how this works before I pull any more of my hair out!

Thanks in advance,

Mr. Confused.

You should do some research first...

    A search for

how much is a dog collar

will yield results about the prices and levels of dog collars.

It's a nonsense phrase for a search engine, so google tries to
    figure out what you want.

    That's why google is #1.

Anyone should know that if you want exact phrase, put
    it in quotes.

A person who knows SEO and google, would know that....

I pity the fools who search for

    rod iron

In this case Google is trying to understand the contextual meaning of your query. Think as of as a site owner. Suppose, you have a page which is about dog collar prices or something like that. What will be your headline for your page? Obviously you are going to name it as 'Dog collar prices' and not 'how much dog collar costs'.

That's been their goal from the start, and it's not changed. I'd say that the popularity and the income streams have only made this stronger. They need their results to look relevant in order to have a place for the ads, and a bait for the advertisers.

Strong pages probably take the first spots for something fairly common, and you need to really do a solid work to get to the fist page. Google hasn't been about exact phrases for years, and there's also a ton of other factors that affect the search results.

Who told me this? An ex Google web spam engineer.

    What's your excuse?

Look, if you yourself can't find any adequate result for the "how much is a dog collar" then why, for God sake, would you optimize for that keyword??? Normally, people think twice before choose the right keywords. Besides, there are many helpful tools if you can't do that yourself.
