Hey guys

Why is it so difficult to get more info about the Youtube search algorithm when its easy to find good info on it for Google. I mean everyone and his mom knows that backlinks always have been the biggest ranking factor and still is. Then of course on page is critical but who questions that back links is the most important if on page is built right?

Do Youtube look at backlinks as well? There is so much bullshit online where people are just writing guides on how important good content is and that its all about how much watch time you have. I dont buy it.

Can someone please point me at the right direction here?

Cheers!

OP For some keywords Google will only display 1 video. So if there is a video already ranking, your video needs to be the best one SEO'd to appear in the top 10 and you need to overpower it before your video will even show up. Build links from high authority domains. It will allow you to rank high in the SERPs without the need of blasting links. You can also work on getting more traffic by writing a good video description, optimizing on the video keywords, making your video viral by getting more views from online communities (LinkedIn, FB, Twitter, etc), and encouraging users to subscribe and link to your video.

Youtube will be good traffic source if that video will appear on search. In this regard need to upload a clean video and Promote that link so that visitors can find you.

I go over the YouTube algorithm in detail on my blog.

There are 4 main metrics. The big one being how users engage with your videos.

There's a tool called VidIQ (it's free) and it gives you detailed analytics of each YouTube video. These analytics offer a good explanation for why videos at the top are ranking.

The VidIQ will reveal the tags that the top videos are using.

It's refreshing to see a YouTube SEO thread that has comment about engagement. This is very important for ranking in the YouTube search.

Added: Descriptions and titles are also important for the search. In addition to engagement the performance of the video also has an effect of the rankings. Not just the number of views, but how much of the video each user actually watched. Here's some optimization tips from YouTube's help.

Title and description need to be more appropriate according to search keywords related to that service or product. You can SEO to that link so that google can find you.

I've found it to be fairly easy to rank a video in YouTube search, but more difficult in Google search.

I recently experimented with some youtube marketing. I created a video, purchased some real human traffic on fiverr (it was good traffic too, the average time spent on my video was like 2:30), and got 200 manual social bookmarks on fiverr.

Within a couple days I was ranked #2 in youtube search and I was on the second page for google video search.

Then my vid got taken down, I think because I was to salesy in it. I'm gonna try it again though cause I was getting some good traffic.

If you want to know which fiverr gigs I used just hit me up with a PM

  • the youtube is the most popular video search engine but its search algorithm is still a secret for most people as there is also not much knowledge about the SEO for a video. but i did some experiment with youtube video by giving proper tags and description and sharing it to various social media to gain traffic and it work to some extent I mean got the ranking on first page but not in the top 5 videos.

Backlinking the youtube video is what i usually aim for after i'm done with on-page seo. Also, views count, how long the viewers are playing the video and comments also contributes in ranking.

The single most important YT ranking factor right now is "Session Watch Time". This is how much/how many videos viewers watch AFTER watching your video. YT rewards videos that get people to watch more video on YT. Makes sense to me.

Also, the number one way to get views on YT isn't from ranking in the search results. More traffic is sent from being a "suggested" video on other video pages. And to be listed as a suggested video Session Watch Time and Viewer Retention are the two most important factors (along with relevancy).

Here's a short article about a concept I've been telling about concerning ranking videos on Youtube and Google. It talks about how Google has filed a patent for "Watch Time". What is interesting is the patent seems to include the PAGE watch time too and not just the video watch time.

What this likely means is Google/YT is encouraging not on videos, but YT pages that get the most interactivity. Viewers that post comments on your videos probably spend more time on the video page than those that don't post comments.

If accurate, it's probably a good idea to think of YT as more of a social site than simply a video site and to interact with those that comment on your videos. And if you have your comments turned off, you may want to turn them on.

It also seems that watch time is more important than views.
