How to reduce bounce rate on a website?
Is it something to do with content quality?
What all factors are responsible for it?

Generally, the way to reduce bounce rate is to make the site suck less so people want to stick around more.

A high bounce rate is not necessarily a bad thing. If your site has an email opt-in or affiliate link you are trying to get people to use, I would be more worried about the success rate of that. If they come to your page and click on your affiliate link, it technically is going to be a bounce, but that is not a bad thing.

If you have a blog, add a list of post related at the end. This can help, but sometimes people come and read, just read and leave. This bounce rate is not so bad.

There's a lot of things you can do to reduce the bounce rate of your website, like Mike Friedman wrote, it's all about making it less sucky.

Here's 5 common things that increase bounce rate:

1.Poor navigation. If you're making it hard for the user to find something they're looking for, they're more likely to leave.

    2. Poor design and layout. Ugly websites don't do well with bounce rates.

    3. Slow website speeds. Around 50% of internet users say they will leave a website if it doesn't load in 3 seconds or less.

    4. Non-responsive. We're living in the era of smartphones, is it your website responsive?

    5. Too much distractions. Having to many elements calling for attention can cause a majority of people to leave your website, keep it focused.

Having bounce rate in the site is nature, but high bounce rate will be a red flag for your site. Which means the site is not doing well for the users and not a good provider as well as giving poor experience to the people.

To reduce bounce rate of your website follow these steps:

Create landing pages which are visually appealing & load fast

Use Virtual Pageviews or Event Tracking for Ajax/Flash based contents

Develop contents which can be consumed in short span of time

Create landing pages which satisfy visitor’s query

Stop targeting keywords/ marketing channels which are sending low value traffic

The most important thing in regards to bounce rate is targetting. If you lets say promote a very specific (Targetted) keyphrase in Google and point our for example a mainpage in your backlinks for this keyphrase, the visitor when he open your mainpage may think "I am wasting my time cos I can`t see the things related to this specific keyphrase", so precise targetting is cruicial to lower a bounce rate. It`s one of the most important factors in Google AdWords for example which has huge influence on costs of clicks.

The relativeness of keyphrase to content of subpage you drive your visitors.

In my opinion it`s most important factor in case of bounce rate.
The other one could be a speed of the website, for example if I try to open a website which loads more than 5 seconds I hit back button in my browser, so the owner of this website will see in his analytics in case of my visit bounce rate 100%

    I hope this helps.

attention span is very short...helps to have something to keep them there like interesting video.
today you have like 1 second to gather interest or else it's bye bye and on to the next site...

Bounce rate is overrated. Very overrated.

It has nothing to do with quality, pretty website, etc.

I can't believe google uses a metric that

    a) has too many intangibles.
    b) Cannot be measured on the majority of the internet.
    c) Would take a mind reader to figure out why someone surfed out.

Did they find what they need and leave? Quick? Did they go to the
    bathroom?

    Add this to it:

Every site/page on the net has its own parameters.
Since that's the case, how much time spent on a website would
be relative ONLY to that site.

Some people surf into amazon to check a price, surf out.
Some people surf into amazon to browse.
Some people know what they want, buy.

All three scenarios would have different times on the site.
    Then add a hundred more...
