    Just like your signature links which is exact match anchor text it doesn't affect the rankings of the site.

    The exact match of your anchor text on incoming links is extremely important. You want to mix it up some, though. If you are trying to rank for "discount blue widget" then you would probably want a majority of your backlinks to use that anchor text. However, if 100% of them use it then that appears spammy to Google. Therefor, you should be targeting a few different keyphrases with each of your pages. While 60% of your backlinks have the anchor text "discount blue widget" another 15% has "blue widget discounts" and another 15% has "blue widget deals" and the remaining 10% has "cheap blue widgets"....that gets you a nice spread that doesn't look spammy, while targeting more keyphrases as well!
