Social bookmarks mostly help in quick indexing. It doesn't pass lots of link juice. But high quality bookmark can give you some referral traffic if you know how to do it. Dont need to waste time on social bookmarking site where people don't engage. Those are just waste of time.

People, people. Think of rivers. How does the Mississippi end up being so big?

It's got a bunch of rivers flow into it. And those rivers have rivers flowing into them. And those rivers have rivers flowing into them.

You get a good link if you get it from a river that has a bunch of rivers that each has a bunch of rivers that flow flow into it. You get a better link if you add another tier of rivers. Or more rivers.

You get enough rivers, you end up with an ocean. An ocean ranks high in Google.

Don't bookmark. Think. Strategize. Come up with a way to get a few backlinks that either have backed links baclinking to them or a way to get a few backlinks to which you can create backlinks that have backlinks that have backlinks.

And all backlinks must be followed otherwise you're wasting time.

Yes bookmarking sites like Reddit, Stumbleupon, Delicous etc still do help in SEO just you need to make a proper strategy for it.

You should be aware of your audience and the content you share.

It should be relevant to your website and at the same time it should not be promotional every time.

Reddit isn't a social bookmarking site, but a collectively "curated" aggregator for interesting topical links. It's a very popular site and can definitely bring some traffic, but the links are nofollow. That's right, Reddit doesn't have any direct SEO benefit.

Rest of the list is more traditional "social bookmarking". I don't know Diggo, but the other place your link on a new PR0 page that isn't linked from any strong page. This is what makes social bookmarking pretty much worthless.

No, it's not. It's not even SEO, most of the time. The links have to be followed for them to count as SEO at all. Most social bookmarking sites add the nofollow tag.

No, they're not. Social bookmarks are one of the least effective classes of backlinks. Some even consider them not backlinks at all. And the reason for this is explained in this thread.

First, there's no way to know which page has a PR of 3 as Google has stopped making that information public.

Second, this is crap. There are far better ways of of getting backlinks.

Unless you get the link from the page that has high PR, the high PR is not useful to you.

Each page gets its own PR... There is no high PR domain, only high PR home page or high PR inner pages.

But, since Google has stopped making that info public, how do you know what the PR is?

How does that work? So I submit my page to digg and that causes google bot's CPU to overclock? Does google's hardware have some special turbo mode that gets enabled when it's a social bookmark?

Did I miss the memo? When google bot finds no follow links on sites that are heavily spammed does this now cause it to jump into top gear and push all the real links to the back of the line?

It is always better to focus on few social bookmark news websites than have dozens of inactive and non-updated profiles.

I personally suggest Hacker News Y Combinator, great website for that job.

  Aside from people claiming sources of crappy nofollow backlinks, such as blog commenting and forum signatures, are great for SEO, I'd say the biggest source of bad advice/junky posts on this forum are from supposed SEOs that confuse non-SEO techniques with real SEO techniques. Sources of traffic outside of Google SERPs are fine, but they have nothing to do with "boosting your rankings." If people could keep the SERPS ranking techniques separate from non-SEO traffic techniques, the quality of replies on this forum would go up a great deal. There probably wouldn't be many replies, but at least the ones that were made might be helpful.

I don't think so, only if you actually get referral traffic.

For instance if you post something relevant and of genuine interest to people on reddit you will get lots of traffic.

Otherwise just stick to posting on Google plus, Twitter, Facebook, YouTube and LinkedIn.

Local business directories are great still for SEO. Like hotfrog, Yelp, Manta.

What's high PR got to do with anything? You're not getting a backlink from the page that's got the high PR. Plus, since Google's stopped updating PR publicly, you don't know the PR of a page. Pages that used to have a PR of 5 might have a PR of 5, 8, 2 or 0 now.

That depends on your definition of work. If it means it helps SEO, it does not work. If it means it may help with traffic, then it may, indeed, work, assuming what you're bookmarking is worth people's time.

I think all Off Page Techniques are good for improving ranking but you know how to use it.

Basically two factors are very important in Social Bookmarking:
1st - Drive free and targeted traffic
2nd - Increase popularity of the website or the blog

Yes, it is helpful. Social Bookmarking is still a worth for a website only when it is done on high PR sites. A popular SB sites could help a newly build website to reach its targeted audience quickly and with a good pace as well. If you choose Reddit, Bitly, Delicious, Disqus, Stotify, Stumbleupon, Diigo etc you could have increase your online presence rapidly. Just think about choosing these sites only.

Yes but the best way to use Social Bookmarks is as part of a social fortress.

This means you set up a few going to your money site and then in Tier 2 you have PBN links coming in boosting them up.

social bookmarking is good task but only when if you are done it on good sites means that sites have a good page rank, domain authority and alexa.

Sites- scoopit, reddit, diigo, delicous, youmob, pinterest, folkd, myspace etc.

So you're talking about links from PBNs? That has nothing to do with the topic. Those links of your can actually have an effect.

Sigh. It's easy to post this kind of garbage, and it'd take me at least three times the space to properly refute your ignorance and stupidity. Well, that's internet in a nutshell.

TL;DR version: Sites don't have pagerank, domain authority is useless in this case, pagerank you see is two years out of date, Alexa is completely useless, and the links aren't on the front page but on some new weak page.

social bookmarking sites are effective or not? Well we have our own experience on behalf of that we all are here commenting. As per my experience its not worthy to think that its the best way to get backlinks but yes its a way to get backlinks. Social bookmarking sites are helpful to crawl your website if you're site is fresh. And there are some sites such as delicious, scoopit, stumbleupon etc where you can connect with groups and communities which helps your to increase your social presence among the people related to your niche. So don't just think about links or links, there are lots of other benefits that you can get from social bookmarking sites.

I think so but not all the social bookmarking sites are equally well. I think Reddit, Stumbleupon and Digg are the best for indexing and referral traffic.

- Drinking local hipster coffee
