Title Tag Problem Drives Me Nuts!

For some reason Google displays the URL and the name of the site instead of the Title Tag that we added. This never happens with any of our other sites. We do use Yoast to add the Title and Description tag.

Been working with this site for a few years. Besides the core pages each member has a highly optimized page for their location. The core pages show correctly, just the 70 or so member pages give a problem.

That can sometimes happen from an HTML heading tag (ex: <h1>).

I've also seen Google SERP titles pull the title from xml files. Wordpress includes a few different xml files.

At first glance, your are doing a terrible job at page titles.

      Best Wood Stoves is iffy...

You also have CT three times.

That's not really a good title for anyone to click on.

I did another check. Your store locations page is also changed,
      as I suspect it would.

Your title is United Fireplace & Stove Member Hearth Stores - U.S. & Canada

Not a great title to find a store...so google shows it as:

Find A Store- United Fireplace and Stove

      Much better title.

There seems to be a plethora of changed titles.

Looks like they are being gleaned from various css that sometimes is not even visible to a visitor.

The drop down menus might also be wreaking havoc.

Anyway, looks like google is doing you a favor.

One HUGE reason why I hate certain CMS's out there.

So much better to hand build a site, and soooooooooo easy, I always harp on people to do just that.

Plugins can also be such a pain when trying to dig deep in the code.

I completely agree, many people assume they need to use a CMS, rather then thinking about the requirements of their project first. Unless there's a very specific reason you need a CMS (such as multi user access, ability for novices to add content, or there's a massive pile of content) then you can usually get away without one. It's definitely way easier for me to just work with HTML files then to sit there for 8 hours banging my head against my desk trying to mod the CMS or build plugins. There's also no security issues or the always fun situation where an update breaks the entire site.

I'll be honest, I never really achieved any success as a marketer until I stopped using wordpress. I use it on a few sites now but it never seems like it does anything but waste my time.

Thanks so much for your free critique of my title tags. It led me to see that Google will grab the real title info sometimes (based on the search query of course) which is a positive thing. For instance if I search something closer to the "poor" title tag like "Best Wood Stoves Fairfield" it delivers the title tag that we chose to use. These "one page wonders" are designed to rank in the location of each store. This is why we wrote the titles as they are. We are accustomed to seeing Google change the title they show based on the search query but have never seen them deliver the combo of URL and name of site that is the actual subject of my post.
