Yes, The geo tagging helps you a lot when it comes to ranking.. However, be careful when coming up to with the attributes that describe the photo. It is always advisable that you have all the images on your website have complete description. There are times where people will search content using the images button on the google search engine for example. So with the photos that are well described, it will be a little bit easier for the google crawls to find your image and later on have it indexed. It is therefore a good practice that you are advised not to stop any time soon.

GEO tagging images is only going to work on apps/websites that use Geo tagging. Google SERPs doesn't use GEO tagging for images.

Google Maps is using Panoramio to host their jpg/png images that you'll see for GEO locations on their map.

If you're trying to rank an image on Google SERPs the single strongest ranking factor is exactly the same as regular webpages, followed backlinks with keyword anchor-text. Make sure to point the followed backlinks directly at the image URL, not a webpage URL.

So yukon... if im trying to rank a page.... geo tagging does not help me rank at all for a local keyword phrase?

Example: If I geo tag my picture on this page
Mobile Homes for Sale in Alabama

If i tag it to alabama..... it wont help at all?

You're saying GEO tag but do you mean GEO tag or alt-text?

I see your image alt-text is Mobile Homes For Sale in Alabama. Alt-text is fine for adding plain text to a webpage but that alone won't rank an image. Again, followed backlinks pointing directly at the image URL is what ranks images.
