I can answer a couple of those questions...

For internal linking, there's no problem at all using a plugin that will do that for you.

In regards to how many external links for a 500 word article, I'd recommend about 6 external links.

Is it okay to set the link to dofollow for external links? Yes, as long as the site is reputable.

From an SEO point of view, you're better off linking manually... if you don't do it randomly or only because what you're linking to has related content (links pass juice, you can use internal links to increase the position of some of your pages).

      Holy Christ!

      No. No. No.

Do not use a plugin for internal linking. That is both stupid and lazy. You want to have complete control over your internal link building, not turn it over to some stupid plugin that is likely to screw it up.

6 external links in a 500 word post? I'm not one that would put an artificial number on something like that and say that it is a rule you must follow, however 6 links seems extremely excessive on such a short article.

The real answer is you should have as many as makes sense. If there is a reason to link out to a page that makes sense for the reader, do it. If not, don't do it.

And no, putting links on your page like you are talking about is not going to decrease the ranking of the page. The more links that are on a page, the weaker each link is, so it effects your internal links from that page, but not the actual ranking.

Adding links is only half the job, removing the dozens of irrelevant links on a typical webpage is the other half.

If you're not looking at the text version of a webpage you really have no idea what's going on. It's just visually easier to spot mistakes (unwanted links).
