which image format is good for seo

I did a search for the word Tom Cruise in Google.

Most of the images that came up first were *.jpg files. So i came to an assumption(not a conclusion) that .jpg files are more welcomed by Google. what are your practical experiences in this?

Please provide other IMage optimization techniques, so that we can make this as a valuable resource.

    I don't see how it would matter. Jpeg is the most common format for photographs which is why you see it so much on these searches.

    It depends on where you insert that image for example for image backlinking Jpeg is good, For ppt/pdf & infographics is png format is good.

    png is loss less compression format so these are good for web. JPEG are lossy formats so you may need to compromise with image quality after reducing its size.

      Well, you managed to get that totally wrong. The lossy compression is the reason why people prefer JPEG. You get the images much smaller with only an insignificant reduction in quality. Have those same pics in PNG and they may take several times the space. And that's relevant because this happens to be a SEO forum.

      The rule of thumb around this topic: JPEG for photographs, and PNG for graphics.

    There are three most famous format of images, that is jpeg, png, and gif. Among these all GIF is having much more advantages than jpeg and png. As GIF format Supports transparency, Can be animated, Great for images with limited colors, Great for text images and so on.
