Building backlinks for site or page?

I am confused about building backlinks to my site. If I build links to my blog through forums and commenting does it help other pages in my blog to rank? or should I build links to the certain page which I want them to rank?

    I think you should build both. When you have powerfull bl to your web, anything you post will be on top.

    First of all forum signature and blog commenting are not quite really pass any link value.
    And second if you build links to your root directory then it will help to rank your entire blog. I mean each and every page. Still if you want any specific page to rank better then you can build links pointing towards them. But always remember that only relevant links from relevant host pages with natural anchor texts can only get you ranked better. Otherwise, the search engines may think that you are trying to manipulate their rankings and you will get red flagged.

    As a general rule of thumb you should build backlinks to the SPECIFIC page that you want to rank.

    And also by default to your homepage for naturalness.

      There are very less number of forums in my niche and I many of them are not dofollow, is it okay to post in non relevant forum. My niche is "magic tricks" can anyone help me to find a forum?

        You should build links to the page you want to rank. However, blog commenting and forum signatures are very unlikely to rank a page.

        How about using the Google search? If there's a forum it shouldn't be that hard to find.

            Not really. Sure, you can see these links in the backlink checker of your choice, but they're usually weak and/or nofollow. Even if the links were "followed" it's pretty likely that Google treats at least some of them as though they were nofollow. They're user-provided links by definition so there's no reason to count them.

    Build backlins on a single page so that it can be ranked on a particular keyword in which you are focusing the most. Later on you can start building quality backlinks for the other pages as well one by one.       The penalty is unlikely. It's not uncommon for people to be active on forums, and use their web properties in signatures and as profile links. I've got probably hundreds of indexed backlinks from forums. They do not help, but do not hurt either.

    Build links for both pages. Creating links for only a page might make doubt in Google eyes, and it have risk of getting penalized. So build links of all of the pages of your site and you'll get good ranking in the end.
