Average Monthly Searches

I am sure you get noobs in here asking the same basic questions so my apologies ahead of time.

But I am curious how you determine what is an acceptable average monthly search for a given keyword for a larger corporate client website?

I am guessing 3000?

And is choosing low competition desirable? It seems that High comp would be desirable because if the keyword is appropriate then everyone in that category is going to naturally use it.

To recap: What is the min ave monthly searches and do I want it to be high or low comp?

Or am I even asking the right questions!?

For the most part, it depends on what is being sold. If I make $5,000 per sale, I'll target a keyword that only gets searched 10 times a month. If I make $0.05 per sale, that is different.

As for competition, I'm assuming you are talking about what you see in Google's keyword planner. In that case, it has nothing to do with rankings. That competition has to do with AdWords advertisers not SEO.

Should I even consider average monthly searches then? It's a website re-write for a large Logistics/Transportation corporation.

They're probably grossing at least 30% on line-haul so they're sales per unique traffic is decent, which means targeting lower traffic volume keywords should see a decent ROI.

Talk to the client, see what their profit is per unique traffic.

I use search volume for prioritizing keywords. I almost never rule any relevant keywords out based on volume.
