As SEO professional you should explain your client about three types of SEO which would be Black hat SEO, White Hat SEO & Grey Hat SEO then ask him about which technique he/she wants.

You have riskier Black Hat practices with SEO that totally ignore Google's webmaster guidelines where it benefits and then you have White Hat seo that is more search engine friendly. Purple hat isn't even relative.

Well...this is where purple hat SEO comes in hand. Just take that purple hat and MAKE the other websites work for you.

You need the following to become the purple hat pimp-guru you dream to be:

1. A perm
2. A Cadillac
3. A magic stick to hit the bit...erm websites to keep them in line

Most likely either the person is joking or uninformed.

Any color of SEO that isn't White/Gray/Black is generally SEO done by a content marketer who has a website about SEO and all the good domain names were already taken.

A domain search tool reveals that some less desirable colors are still available if you would like to follow in their footsteps.

Also, gray hat SEO is not a category of techniques, it's a technique that can be either white hat or black hat depending on how it's actually implemented. PBNs are an excellent example of this. Companies like Google and Amazon have a network of sites similar to a PBN, obviously there's nothing wrong with that. Some guys build networks of sites using robots that produce garbage content and build links with spam tools and that's certainly not white hat seo, or even close to it.

I found the source of the confusion, I believe (it's on seocandyland.com; and they have a really cool purple hat on the homepage):

There was an ancient website called BlueHatSEO where the owner Eli talked in great lengths about advanced SEO tactics (gray, white, and blackhat) that worked during that time period. A lot of it is still relevant today, but the torch has been passed down to Ross (skohh) and it's been turned into a forum. But they've kept the archives of the ancient advanced SEO tactics. Purple SEO is nonsense. Maybe the client got confused with an internet meme of some sort. The philosophy of BlueHatSEO was pretty much "No-Hat SEO" mentality. That means you do not side by colors but that which works.

No matter whatever name we use finally the only two techniques one is bot or do manually to create backlinks. The thing matter is how quality back-links we used to create boost-up website ranking. I do agree with all, there is nothing like purple hat SEO.

What the hell is Purple Hat anyway? Purple Hat is the set of methods that uses non-conventional SEO techniques, "hidden" in scripts that analyze real-time data traffic comprise the keywords defined in the parameters of your website. (META tags, ROBOTS and DESCRIPTION).

It seems complicated at first glance, but it is not. In fact, these programmers analyze what are the affiliate programs that pay more (AdSense now balls, as he does not move) and checks which ads are more clickable. There is no point having high traffic if your ads are not attractive.

The Ad relationship with strong potential clicks in hand, they make use of scripts (mouseover) that as soon as the user moves the mouse over Adsense, it is redirected to page for that ad. Sometimes the process is delayed for a few seconds. So there is no suspicion on the part of users.

Also this technique of imaging is done: by clicking on an image after a few seconds, the user is redirected to some advertising.

This is not done all the time. The webmaster / programmer acts so as not to arouse suspicion largest search engine. Most of the time, these guys buy blogs or websites and use them as satellites.

You may have seen ads Buy your website or blog around. If you have not yet encountered this, try searching for "Sell your blog"; or "Sell your website." You'll find hundreds of probloggers ads offering money for your blog or site.

This is just a way where we try to find out a sweet spot to get good natural links for your website to get high ranking and creating such type of content which is going to circulate by your readers. Because this time creating high quality links is not going to work for you. So you need to find out loop whole which is going to work for you and not used by your competitors.

If you were actually an SEO professional, you would know that most clients don't want to sit through something so freaking boring.

Never heard of purple hat as well. I see a few possibilities:

1. Client misspoke. Strange to misspeak and mean black/gray/white and saying purple instead but some people's brains work differently.

2A. Client has heard of purple hat and thought it legit. See post #24 but I saw no purple hat there.

2B. Client confused about the color. See post #38

3. Client was testing you. Since you did not respond, he dismissed you. Next time, educate them Amber suggests in post #10. You're being hired as an expert so you have to know these things. Also see post #52.

4. It was some sort of joke. You did not respond correctly so he's not hiring you. See post #27.

I think #3 is most likely. I've been on interviews where the interviewer is trying to stump you somehow and see your response. If you go on and talk about something that doesn't exist, you're not right for the job. If you say you don't know, at least you're honest. If you say there's no such thing, you earn their respect.

Did it ever occur to your that your client is in fact a client and had no idea what he/she was talking about? They may have heard something about colors, hats, and SEO and got Purple Hat SEO from it. Explain to them there is no such thing and ask them what they want accomplished when they say Purple Hat SEO.
