Hi,

I wonder if backlinks have weight ?
I mean is it important to which page/url on my site the link points or just the fact is important enough ?

For example if I have a pdf file to download from my site and somebody links to it - is it worth the same as he would make that link to my home or article page ?

thx

  • The thing with back links is that it's important to have a diversified back link profile. So, that link is important to google because it shows that somebody is linking to a specific page on your website which looks really unique and organic to Google. So, in short, it's good to have links to the home page and to you specific pages.

No, they do not weigh anything, they are zero calories, no carbs, no transfats as well.

Yes, it's important to which page/url the link points to.
    Yes, facts are important.

No, because the pdf file doesn't have links to the rest of your site. A link to the page that allows you to download the file on your site would be much more helpful to your site, since it would allow the authority flow from that inbound link to flow across the links on that page to the rest of your site.

People need a real discussion, not psycho-SEO-babble.

I readily find pdfs in search. Now ask yourself, how did they get there?
They are not webpages. And yet they are ranking. I do not
need to go to any site to find or get it. I just click and download it.

How did that happen? By accident? Google just decided to toss
a pdf file up there for the heck of it? Where did google get the
      title, summary, etc?

Google use to have a "view as html" option a while back on pdfs.
Why? Google converted the text to html! That option is outdated,
and I don't believe they use it anymore.

      That's another tip off.

The only way google finds things is by crawling the web.

Perhaps, just perhaps, the location and number of download
links to a pdf file matter.

But that's the danger of a pdf file. Nobody has to go to
any site to get it. They can get it right from google.

So this thread has to morph into pdfs in general.

You need to put strategic links to your main site throughout
      the file.

Yes, google crawls pdfs. Have user-friendly file names.
Fields and other settings need to be optimized.
Use plain text. Plain text. Plain text. Plain text.

And since google crawls pdfs, they do crawl any links.

Google crawling a link is a good thing.

Links in signature will not help your SEO. Not on this site, and not on any other forum.
Who told me this? An ex Google web spam engineer.

      What's your excuse?

Sure they have weight, that's the whole point of Google Pagerank.

Any file type that Google can index can also be ranked, links work the same way no matter the indexable file type.

Right but you mean weight of the backlink FROM the site where it is - that's clear that it's most important, but i mean weight of backlink TO - I mean to where it points not from where.

Again, you're describing Pagerank. That's exactly how Pagerank works.

Even though public Pagerank is no longer updated Pagerank still exist. It's obvious the process hasn't changed, followed authority links still rank pages today.

The file type accumulates Pagerank based on the amount of inbound followed links pointing at the file URL. Assuming the inbound links already have authority (Pagerank).
