New domain for part of your website

Is it possible to set-up a different domain for part of your website.

We have an event coming up and we are discussing the pros and cons of setting up part of our website for the event, with pages connected (for example domain/event-name/section-1, etc.), or having a unique domain.

I've been told we don't need to create a brand new site, we can just have a new domain for that part of the website (so the example above would change to eventname/section-1, etc.)

I'm assuming this would involve redirecting pages to the new domain - unless there's another way to do this?

What do we need to be careful of if we do this? I.e. I'm concerned about things like duplicate content issues, and how this could effect the site's performance in search engines. I'm also concerned about losing the value of having those pages and the traffic to our main domain URL by redirecting people.

It really depends if you want to keep your events on the same website or setup a separate website just for your events.
If you use a subdomain events.domain.com for example (free to setup) it will be treated as a separate website.

If the events are related to the same site though, I think it would make more sense if you create an event page to list all of the events on.
If all of the events are different then they should contain different information and therefore will not be treated as duplicate content.

You can simply configure your menu navigation to include a menu item that links to another domain and there is also a Wordpress plugin that can turn any page into a link to another domain.
