There are 10,100,000 sites competing for that keyword in google and it gets approx. 24,900,000 searches per month. It's the best possible keyword I can think of for my website. There are giants like Skyscanner, Ryanair, Easyjet,... on the first page.

Is it even remotely possible for a new website (I've got quality content, it's SEO optimized (however I don't have that keyword in my domain) and I'm about to start building backlinks (Angela's and Paul's, linkwheels, ...)) to reach first page, because it sounds really ridicolous to me. Should I just find another keyword?

Long answer, if you want to rank on the first page of Google in a short period of time, you will want to find a keyword that has SEO competition less than 100,000 sites. Also, it is good to check the Page Ranking of the top 10 sites and the quality of the backlinks to them.

An awesome tool that does this all for you in seconds is Market Samurai (no affiliation with them).

Go to keyWordDiscovery dot com - type in "cheap flights" and this will break it down to what ppl are searching for as far as long tail KWs.

don't target the first page for this - use a combination with some long tail keywords instead. -> Go and targt a NICHE.
Even if you could rank for cheap flights, what would be the benefit? Those that sell something cheap often cannot pay a good commission in affiliate programs.

Thank you all for your answers. I guess I'll just have to find another keyword (I knew cheap flights was a stupid idea ).

Onlineleben - isn't airline industry a niche? I really want to do what I'm doing since I love doing this. This website is meant to be a portal (community style) with good airfare deals. I was planning to go with Adsense and other ads, not with promoting or selling anything.

Well, there is NOTHING that cannot be done, anything can be done, because, everything are being handle by human. Ok,

I don't think only running angela's backlinks & paul's will not help you much. You have to do massive link building. You have to follow up all other ways to get backlinks and get links to your site. If you can get TOP#10, I am sure, there are more business for you. However, it cannot be done within 01 day or 01 month or even 03 months, You have to put a massive effort at least for 5-6 months to archive your goal, OR otherwords, you may hire a SEO guru to do this for you. (If you wish to spend money for this :p), There are lots and lots links have to be placed for this.... BEST OF LUCK man.

I think it is more like a big wide room than an easy to target niche, but this is my opinion.
You can create a portal with different niches that all cater the airline industry in general and still contains well defined and therefore targeted subniches.
Think flights to different cities, descriptions of the airports and the shops and restaurants there, airport parking, public transport from airport to city center etc.
You can build this all around your main topic and attract adsense advertisers. And to come back to your origianl keyphrase, you can even include links to different affiliate programs (eg. expedia) and offer flights (sometimes even cheap flights), hotels, car rentals and more.
Hope this helps - good luck and let me know how it works out (also have something going in this area)
