For a long while used Market Samurai. But now usually Google Keyword Planner.

I just use the free versions of the networks I want to rank in. Google for example use webmaster tools as well and that will show you certain keyword phrases that your getting impressions and clicks from as well as where you are in the serps so you can optimize what you have and get good exposure.

I use a paid source. Its called keyword discovery, and it isn't cheap. But its worth it. I rely on this more than Google Planner.

I start with porn and a sandwich, not always in that order.

Google Keyword planner think that still is one of the best tools, but there are some really valid, SerpIQ and KeywordSpy.
Even Ubersuggest is good, but not as the first.
Instead personally really like Market Samurai, and even Samrush looks interesting.
But if your work involves the use of Youtube, have a look also at Youtube keyword tool.

I am using both paid and free source.
When I need keywords for adwords or PPC, I prefer Google Keyword Planner. It gives more information about keyword's competition and suggested bids.

For Organic SEO campaign, I use Semrush Pro.
Latest update in Semrush Pro allows me to download keywords list of any competitior on which website ranks in top 100 positions. In other words, I can get top 100 keywords of competitor's website which ranks in top 10 pages of Google Search Engine.

Google keyword planner tends to be where I go but it's the last step for me.

Before then I'll look at

Google autosuggest
Google related searches
Amazon autosuggest
Quorra and Yahoo Answers
And wikipedia

How do you compare conversions to views? Say for instance, 47,000 views & 9,000 conversions. Is that considered a decent conversion rate?

  There isn't one set conversion rate that's considered "good" or "great" or "right." It varies quite a bit by the niche you're in and other factors.
  
  With that said, your example (real or not) is close to a 20% conversion rate. Depends what your business is, but most people would kill to get a 20% conversion rate for visitors/sales.
