If it has previously been filled with non optimized articles?

There has been no spamming done to the site, no backlinks or anything.

So can it still get ranked if optimized articles etc were added?

Hey, karmadog. If the only variable in the equation is unoptimized articles, and the website and domain are in good standing with Google, then you're fine, absolutely fine.

    Cheers - Tom

Yes, the pages will still rank If you do SEO.

I've completely overhauled & ranked old pages/URLs, same niche totally different keywords.

Short answer is, YES, you can still rank the blog using optimized content and other SEO techniques (Link Building, Social Networking and etc.).

Long answer would be, even if your current (or past) content was not "optimized", it would still be targeting a specific niche or industry (considering it wasn't a personal blog and whatnot) and there will definitely be an SEO benefit in it.

So as long as you are using natural content and promoting your blog site using ethical linking techniques, you are all set to go.

What if only a few out of hundreds of articles I write are optimized? Will the optimized pages still have a chance at ranking, or will the other non optimized stuff I add have some kind of adverse effect.

I'm not talking about the old non optimized articles now, I mean If most of my new articles were non optimized.

In short, what I mean is, can a site rank if most of the content is not optimized?

        Sites don't rank. Pages rank.

Internal pages can be influenced by inbound internal links, so yeah, other pages on the same domain do play a role when ranking pages. A good example of that is double or triple SERP listings (ex: screenshot below), Google Sitelinks & Google Mega Sitelinks.

I understand they play a role, but can the other pages on the same domain if they are non optimized ruin or prevent the ranking of the optimized pages?

They don't ruin. They can help other pages rank or not. But they do not ruin.

To help, they'd have to link to the page you want to rank, or to pages that link to the page you want to rank.

But, again, you do not get penalized for having pages that are not optimized for anything or optimized for something other than the pages you want to rank are optimized for.

Bottom line, sure, you can rank a single page on a domain but that's a waste considering you have full control over your own site.
