Good Wordpress theme for SEO and pagespeed

I've been trying to build my site with the Avada wordpress theme as I love how I can basically put anything anywhere but I am getting slow Google pagespeed insight scores and errors displaying the menu, the revolution slider, embedding a youtube video won't display etc...

Basically I wonder whether there is just too much going on with all the different modules in this theme and it is clashing and causing too many errors. I have tried Wordpress Rocket and W3TC plugins to try to speed things up and it made it worse or things "broke" on my site.

I am wondering if I should abandon Avada and try a more lightweight theme with something like Visual Composer plugin to customize the layout.

I am wanting this for a tourism website for an offline business.

Any suggestions for a good Wordpress theme that is fast and easy to use that looks good for an offline tour related business trying to rank in Google local search in Australia?

I've never actually developed a site on top of Avada, but as far as I know it's quite a heavy theme. Adding a few plugins can make it a lot heavier still. You could try P3 Profiler to see what exactly makes the site slow.

If you're using W3 Total Cache you should only activate the parts that you need. Page and browser caching tend to be fairly safe. The plugin can certainly break your site. JS/CSS combine/minify is something I'd recommend only for advanced users, for example.

It's also possible that your host is just a slow one, or you're on a server with bad "neighbors".

Yes, it's very likely that there's themes that are lighter. In my opinion StudioPress' themes have been lightweight, but if you've used to the customizability of Avada... well, these are kind of at the other end. I'd try to see if there's a problem that you can pinpoint before switching themes.

    Thanks nettiapina.

I am only a beginner with minifying html, css, javascript etc. and don't really understand what I'm doing. I am also running Cloudflare which also has an option to minify these so maybe that is causing some of the errors on my site as well?

Has anyone heard of "Total" theme?

I think it is another customizable theme like Avada. One of my competitors is using it and seems to be getting better pagespeed scores.

But I wanted to check to see if anyone else has heard of it and if all of those "fully customizable" wordpress themes are heavy and slow like Avada and I'd just be in for the same thing?

You can customise your own theme to make sure that you follow the design that you want.

If you have an artistic side it's easier to do. Just keep it simple but with a touch of elegance.

There are 100s of themes which you can use for your requirement. All you need to do is Google, spend some time , see through the theme demos and then get one of your choice

It's possible. I'm not quite sure what's the exact reason, but combine/minify seems to break some sites. I've had multiple cases where I had to carefully choose the files to include. I'm not sure if Cloudflare even allows you to do this.

I've heard this being said about Avada, but I can't confirm the claim. But simple logic would point to that direction. The more stuff you add to the theme, the more work there's to the server and browser.

As I said there's several other possibilities too. For example, Jetpack is (or has been) one of the heaviest plugins available, and many site owners seem to have that installed. If you're paying under $5/mo for your hosting the server just might be the problem.

This one of the problems. There's not just hundreds, but more than 3000 themes on WordPress.org alone. WordPress.org enforces some development conventions, but there's no guarantee on the quality. There's even less guarantee on a site such as ThemeForest. Anyone can whip up a theme, and start selling it.

No. Have you even installed WordPress? The only SEO-ish feature in the WordPress core is the rewrites for user-friendly URLs.

Theme controls everything. The plugins overwrite what the theme does. That's it.

Thanks again nettiapina. You're the only one to give me an insightful and useful answer so far in this thread!

I'm using Hostgator Shared Hosting and Cloudfare CDN as they say they have servers in Sydney and Melbourne and Australia is where 90% of my customers come from.

Cloudflare don't give the option to minify just individual files. its all html, css and javascript or nothing. I've switched the minifying off but it doesn't seem to have helped. I used to have Jetpack installed (again not really sure what it does but I seemed to think I should have it) but I have uninstalled it now.
