Hi All!
I have been hearing conflicting things from different people/sources.
I really need to know if activity on a website will effect its SERP ranking. If so, how?
Thanks.

    • Hearing how from where: Radio, TV, personal conversations?
    • How do you know things are conflicting?
    • Are these people/sources known to public?

Why do you think that people in this forum know more than your people/sources have provided

No it doesn't. How could Google possibly know if there's real activity on a website?

Traffic has an indirect effect of creating natural links over time. (Maybe, as an experienced SEO with lots of sites, I look at my backlink profiles and I'm personally responsible for creating the lion's share of them.) Which is what ranks your site. Links. I have this done to the point to where I can look at a SERP, make a link building plan, and I end up where I want to rank 80%+ of the time.

    Tip:
Don't listen to the above poster. It doesn't even matter what they say, just pretend they don't exist. They just signature spam, troll, and try to start arguments.

Or they'll ask for proof as if the professionals here are going to reveal their business internals to random people on the internet to win an internet argument.

What they said may even agree with what I said, I have no idea, I didn't read it and you shouldn't either.

CTRs do increase your SERPs which indirectly means traffic increase your SERPs.
    Think about it:
Social signals can boost your rankings. Now where will the natural social signals come from? only when you have traffic right? So yes once you get traffic, your rankings will increase.
Dont even think about getting bot traffic btw!

Yeah I agree! In 2016 google will not rank you without social signals. Since 90% of the activity is on social media is very much important that you are getting them as well. You could have really well done SEO on and off page but if noone talks about you? You really think that google will rank you?

Google doesn't really care about social signals.

If nobody talks about your site will it rank?

Absolutely yes, I could dump you out a massive spreadsheet of 100,000,000 sites that nobody is talking about and they're ranking.

        Google: colonic hydrotherapy

Notice: What happens during and after a typical colonic irrigation using colon hydrotherapy?

Doesn't even have social sharing buttons, do you think people are on FB are like OH YEAH THAT SITE ABOUT COLONC HYDROTHERAPY IS THE BOMB SHARE SHARE SHARE.

Nobody is talking about that site anywhere.

Not true. I know from personal experience (as in, I have sites with low ctr and sites with high ctr in the same position, for months and months).

Plus, I paid attention when I did a social signals campaigns. Traffic went up like crazy, rankings didn't budge. Surely, if traffic matters, getting 8 or 9 times more traffic should have bumped me up at least 1 position, no?

You think about it: how would social signals boost your rankings? I mean it, think about it. Hint: Rankings are based on links...

No it's not. Among other things, because of what I said above. But, also, because it would be so easy to buy a bunch of visitors, send them to the same site of mine and see my site move up in the ranks.

Besides, how would it be done, 1st visit only, return visits too?

As regards relevance, if I write an article about Maltese puppies and point a bunch of lose-inner-thigh-fat at it, I'll be ranking for lose inner thigh fat.
Would not make money, but I'd rank. Don't believe me, look into what happened to Santorum (the guy who ran for president of the US).

As regards high-bounce rate: You didn't think thins one through. If people land on my webpage and that page gets them exactly what they want, they will have no reason to look through my site.

100% bounce rate is a wonderful thing, if you have an Adsense site and all your visitors click on an ad.

And, by the way, how does Google know how many of them bounced because of stomach problems, the boss walking in on them at work, their mother-in-law arrived, etc., etc.?

Its about relevance. Keywords you are ranking for needs to be relevant to your site and you cannot rank for some that just have high number of searches and you did a 500 word article just that you will rank for them. It doesn't work this way.

Also if google sees that you have amazingly high bounce rate and that people went back to the search engine 10 seconds after the visited your site, it would mean to them that you are not relevant for that keyword.
I don't have to think. I know. Yes, I do. My main site has pages on page 1 in Google and yet nobody's ever talked about my site on no social media platform. (My loved ones have talked to me about it, though only face-to-face).

Low keyword competition then and long tail keywords?

Are you trying to rank on Car Insurance Quote or something?

Trust me, from my personal experience, :looks at SERP: bad idea. And social shares aren't going to make a difference.

You're going to have to beat nationwide.com just to get on the page.

And to get to #1 you're going to have to beat progressive's massive PBN. GOOD LUCK.

            Seriously?

            http://shelleysinsuranceagency.com/

Because every insurance agent that isn't progressive just wants to have a bunch of keyword stuffed anchor texts on their index page.

It looks so "Natural" just big blocks of links in the middle of the page.

If Google ever penalizes any of my sites I'm going to give them a spreadsheet of all the fortune 500 companies that do the exact same thing and are *more aggressive* then I would ever attempt.

What has your experience with traffic bots been like? Why would it be so bad to use them?

Everything you said is just plain wrong. Google has no idea what kind of traffic some of the sites I'm working on gets because there is no Google Analytics, Webmaster Tools, or any other Google property tied to the sites. So how in the hell can they use traffic as a ranking factor when they don't know the traffic of the majority of websites on the internet?

This, as was pointed out above, is total nonsense. Google does not care about social signals. And WTF does "Since 90% of the activity is on social media" mean? 90% of what activity?

On second thought, yes it will.

Go to your site, put your mouse cursor over the refresh button, then get a drinking bird to click your mouse over and over.

    It's a rank hack.

Your position in the SERP will explode.

The short answer is that NO, a website's traffic does not have a direct impact on its rankings within organic search results. If this were the case, new content would never be able to rank, since it would have no traffic.
