Personally, I have never read anything from Google that suggests they penalize sites with pop-ups. I would be interested if anyone can post an authoritative link to the source of such information.

I know this doesn't answer your question specifically, but it does suggest Google doesn't like pop-ups. Knowing that, and knowing how much I dislike them, I would personally not use them.

But to say that this proves Google will penalize sites that have them is a real stretch, IMO.

Google is counting user experience more and more as signals for ranking ( they have a lot of data they can pull from activity on their own site and through the chrome browser). Though there may not be an official penalty its likely to be more and more the case that rankings will be affected by activities that readers don't like.

BTW: Everyone is using popups these days. They are just the type that Google cannot detect. I think they are called lightbox popovers or something. And it's getting really annoying.

It is not yet proven that Google really penalizes pop-ups.

But as far as I know I read it one time that Google is really against the use of pop-ups.

Pop-ups are really annoying.

Personally for me, Pop ups work quite well. And I am referring to pop ups that come up when you first visit the site and the visitor is asked to opt in for an email, and/or to get a discount coupon.

What I find REALLY annoying is the "exit pop up" especially the ones that pop up when you get anywhere near your web browser's top bar, even if you are not even leaving the page - it keeps popping up.

And even worse are top websites like CNN that have videos in their articles and they force you to view the video with sound blasting without having the "pause" button available for at least during the commercial.

First I agreed with all points stated above about poor user-experience people get when you set annoying pop-ups at the same when visitor is eager to read something required.

Here I would like to say that Google announced a penalty for displaying "Giant App Install interstitial ads" Update is effective since 2nd Nov, 2015 in Google's mobile search algorithm.
Simply Google doesn't consider those sites "mobile-friendly" that have App install interstitial pop-up that hide a significant amount of content from users.

Yes personally, i also have never read anything regarding the same. But these kind of sites are not authentic also redirect some adult pop us and other ads. Don't use such type of sites for link building purpose.

I agree, as an user, popup can be very annoying but as a site owner, it can boost your business. So far I have not seen ranking drops with the right pop-ups but a lot of SEO experts say it has an immediate impact on ranking.

I personally hate pop ups and have never used them. Many of my clients use pop up domination for their email lists. I HATE those things. They are on every single website it seems like.

Well I read an article published in a fortune magazine and according to them Google just recently started penalizing site's search engine ranking that uses mobile pop-up ads to urge users to download their app. According to them it destroys the users experience and obstructs users from seeing the content of the page. So friend I think Google will possibly go after this issue pretty hard.

Pop-ups are usually extremely annoying and ruin a visitor's experience when visiting a website (especially those pop-ups that make it difficult to leave a page). I know that I personally hate pop-ups and avoid returning to site that have them. Google, when ranking sites, looks at the bounce rate, ie, how much time it takes for a visitor to leave a website.

So, there is not a specific penalty for pop-ups. However, if the pop-ups are causing visitors to leave quickly, then the site's bounce rate will increase, which is not good. This tells Google that visitors are not finding your site to be relevant to the Keyword that was searched. This might not be the case at all, but the increased bounce rate makes it look as such. So, anything that may increase the rate a which a visitor leaves a site (pop-ups) should be avoided.

No, Google does not penalize you for having popups or popunders on your website. I have many websites with PopAds, have had for years, and never had a single problem with any of them. Nor have any of the other webmasters I know.

I don't think Google will penalize for websites which have popups but I heard that for better mobile user experience Google may give less importance to mobile websites which have popup.
