On Keyword Research and Competition Analysis

Hi everyone,

I've been reading up on threads here trying to catch up to new trends and best practices before i start my internet marketing campaign.

I'm confused about what keyword research tool to use and how to interpret the numbers. From the majority of comments i read yesterday, it seems Google Keyword Planner is not the best tool to find the right keywords as the numbers can be misleading.

I'd like to know what keyword research tool to use (preferably, free) and how to know what keywords to target. I'd also like to know how to use the SERPs to know who my competition is and how to do better.

Thank you for your help.

Samuel

    Here are some tips how to do keyword research:
    - gett started with a brainstorm list;
    - acknowledging that you need a keyword research tool;
    - refining your list using suggested keyword phrases from an analysis tool;
    -verifying keyword phrase relevance;
    - looking at search volume to determine consumer demand;
    - analyzing the competitive space to make sure you and the searcher think the keywords mean the same things, and to decide if the space is too competitive.

    Thank you for the responses. I'm downloading the trial version of market samurai now, also looking at other tutorials on how to do proper keyword research. What stumps me though is how all of that helps me rank higher than my competition. Of course, I'm putting up great helpful content. I just don't want to be groping about in the dark. Competition analysis? Thank you everyone, once again.

    I believe all keyword tools get their information directly from google keyword planner. For competition analysis, it's best to look at google SERP to see if their on-page is good and then use a tool to view their link profile and see how hard it would be to beat.

    Definitely do not use Market Samurai. It is a useless POS.

    It does not matter what your keywords are. You have 3 competitors. The top 3 sites. That's it. You need to analyze them and what they are doing. No tool will do that effectively for you.
