Outranking the competitor

There is a keyword I want to rank no.1 for that has 326,000 results broad match.

I posted an article on my site and I'm result no.96

I want to be the 1st and I know its possible. I intend to do so building backlinks.

My question is this:

1. Should I build backlinks to the specific page on my website that has the keyword seeing as it is indexed already?

2. In order to outrank the no.1 do I need more backlinks than no.1 position MAIN site or that particular PAGE in the no.1 spot...

ie. Do I need stronger backlinks than www.websitename.com or www.websitename.com/keyword-page

You don't need more backlinks than your competitor. What you need is to create backlinks that are targeted to the topic and relevant. That makes your links weigh more in the serps.

Plus...one tiny thing. If any of your top competitors have web20 properties (wp and the like), interact with thier blog leaving a trackback or comment pointing back to your site.

Above all...stay very relevant to the subject.

the backlinks should be pointing to the specific page.

always think relavancy when building backlinks.

  When you talk about backlink relevency, are you merely referring to the backlink anchor text being relevent (containing your target keywords / key phrase) or are you referring (in addition to that) to your links having to be on relevant sites?
  
  There has been some discussion on these forums recently that putting links on relevant websites makes no odds since Google doesn't consider how relevant the content on that page is to your own site, apart from the anchor text in your links?
  
  I'm still uncertain as to whether google does indeed consider the relevancy of the page overall, or whether only the anchor text matters, regardless of what site you place it on and no matter how closely related that site is to your own?

  It has to do with how many "votes" you get from other sites. Don't listen to a ton of garbage that makes it more complicated. Higher PR sites count for more "votes" as one of the top guys at Google said.
  
  So theoretically a 100 PR 1 links could equal 1 PR 6 link.
